Action & cut: Using Windows Movie Maker XP® in ESL classrooms
This study looks at the use of Windows Movie Maker XP® to facilitate students' presentation skills in their English for Professional Communication classes. In the study, students are given the task to produce a short movie based on their meeting presentations which contribute 10% to their course assessment. They are instructed to form groups which consist of five to six members. The movie has to be approximately 10 minutes long with the script written
originally by the students. They also need to submit the completed version of the movie in a CD format. The study indicates that Windows Movie Maker XP® enables students to share their meeting presentation movies with their classmates and lecturers. This study also shows that using Windows Movie Maker XP® can help students' learning environment in many ways: they find that English as a Second Language (ESL) classrooms can be enjoyable because of the availability of technology which they can utilize; they improve their English in the context of meeting environments which are assigned by their lecturers, and they build their confidence through the role play
A Semiotic Analysis on the Help Movie Posters

Movie posters normally contain many kinds of verbal and visual signs.The images with text that appear in the movie poster inform the viewer aboutwhat approximately happened along the story. It reflects the main idea of the story in the movie. In this research, the researcher used verbal and visual signs found in movie posters from racism theme movie entitled The Help as the main data. They consist of two The Help official movie posters which were launched byDreamWorks Studio and The Help reprint movie posters were designed by posterartists or graphic designers that versed in designing a movie poster. There arethree problems of the study that are answered in this research, they are: (1) What are the denotative signs found in The Help movie posters; (2) What are the connotative signs found in The Help movie posters; and (3) What are the myths built in The Help movie posters.Since the main data were taken from movie posters, qualitative researchwith content or document analysis was used in this research to describe thephenomena. In analyzing the data, the researcher used Barthes theory (1972) to build the meaning through denotation and connotation theory and how it is then bringing them into a myth that people believed as racism issues in The Help movie posters.The denotative signs found in this research are from the representation of visual and verbal elements in the posters such as the title, tagline, and the image of women, gestures, and facial expression, the image of bench, pigeon, ravens, cage, cartoon, and also colors. While connotation is used to build the meaning behind each of denotative signs found in the movie posters such as the way the citizens of America face the racism issues based on the skin color differences. The myth built in the movie posters consider White people as the best race between others is pictured in the fifth of The Help movie posters.Related to this study, the researcher suggests the next researcher to analyzeanother object like videos, movie or any motion picture. The use of differenttheories is also suggested for the next researcher to expand the knowledge about semiotic study
The Directive Illocutionary Acts in the Help Movie
Komunikasi merupakan proses penyampaian informasi dari pembicara ke pendengar. Agar penyampaian informasi berjalan baik, dibutuhkan pemahaman yang sama mengenai informasi tersebut antara pembicara dan pendengar. Dalam penyampaian informasi, terdapat banyak alat untuk menyampaikannya, salah satunya adalah melalui film. Film merupakan salah satu alat penyampaian pesan kepada penonton. Agar informasi dari film ini tersampaikan dengan baik, alur cerita dan peran pemain harus berjalan dengan baik. Salah satu film yang menarik perhatian penulis adalah film The Help. The Help merupakan film terkenal yang berasal dari Amerika Serikat yang berisi percakapan bernada rasisme.Tujuan penulisan skripsi ini tidak hanya sekedar untuk mengetahui jenis-jenis directive illocutionary act yang terkandung dalam beberapa ujaran si pemain, namun juga untuk mengetahui faktor apa saja yang mempengaruhi pemain film tersebut dalam menggunakan indirect speech act dalam film tersebut.Data yang digunakan merupakan kalimat yang mengandung directive illocutionary act. Metode pengambilan data menggunakan purposive sampling dari teori Sudaryanto, metode simak bebas libat cakap, yaitu teknik rekam dan teknik catat. Dalam menganalisis data, penulis menggunakan teori dari Vanderveken.Hasil analisis menunjukan bahwa terdapat 5 jenis directive illocutionary act yang ditemukan dalam film The Help yaitu request, command, prohibit, warn, dan pray. Dalam analisis juga terdapat direct dan indirect speech act. Faktor yang mempengaruhi pembicara dalam menggunakan indirect speech act yaitu sebagai upaya dalam mendapatkan sesuatu dari lawan bicara yang mempunyai kekuasaan lebih tinggi
Racial Discrimination Reflected In Tate Taylor’s The Help Movie (2011): A Sociological Approach
The major problem of this study is how the racial discrimination reflected in The Help movie (2011) by Tate Taylor. The objective of this study is to analyze the movie based on its structural elements and to analyze the movie based on the sociological analysis. In analyzing The Help, the writer uses qualitative method and Sociological approach. The data sources consist of primary data and
secondary data sources. The primary data source is The Help movie and the secondary data sources are books or any information related to racial discrimination. The method of the data collection is library research. The technique of data analysis is descriptive analysis. The outcome of the study is shown in the following conclusions. First, based on the structural analysis of the movie, it shows that Taylor wants to express his idea about difference rule
between white and black skin. Second, based on Sociological Approach, the conclusion is that there is racial discrimination in the Tate Taylor’s The Help movie. Taylor shows that the racial discrimination is shown by the white women who become the employer of the black women who become the maid. The maids get many differences of the facilities from their employers
