Information extraction from multimedia web documents: an open-source platform and testbed

    No full text
The LivingKnowledge project aimed to enhance the current state of the art in search, retrieval and knowledge management on the web by advancing the use of sentiment and opinion analysis within multimedia applications. To achieve this aim, a diverse set of novel and complementary analysis techniques have been integrated into a single, but extensible software platform on which such applications can be built. The platform combines state-of-the-art techniques for extracting facts, opinions and sentiment from multimedia documents, and unlike earlier platforms, it exploits both visual and textual techniques to support multimedia information retrieval. Foreseeing the usefulness of this software in the wider community, the platform has been made generally available as an open-source project. This paper describes the platform design, gives an overview of the analysis algorithms integrated into the system and describes two applications that utilise the system for multimedia information retrieval

E/Valuating new media in language development

This paper addresses the need for a new approach to the educational evaluation of software that falls under the rubric "new media" or "multimedia" as distinct from previous generations of Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) software. The authors argue that present approaches to CALL software evaluation are not appropriate for a new genre of CALL software distinguished by its shared assumptions about language learning and teaching as well as by its technical design. The paper sketches a research-based program called "E/Valuation" that aims to assist language educators to answer questions about the educational effectiveness of recent multimedia language learning software. The authors suggest that such program needs to take into account not only the nature of the new media and its potential to promote language learning in novel ways, but also current professional knowledge about language learning and teaching

Science is very important in our everyday lives. That is the reason why students have to learn science since the beginning of their primary school. However, many students find difficulties in studying science. Some experts believe that the use of multimedia software can help students in learning science. In this case, the creation of science learning aid software with multimedia capabilities can be useful for both students and teachers. With the softwareā€™s capability of visualizing the objects, and enhancing it with animation and sound, students are expected to have better understanding. Based on the softwareā€™s evaluation performed by the students and teachers, most respondents found that the science learning aid software are really helpful in studying science

Multimedia is being used in almost every field. This study is about the use of multimedia in the area of intelligent tutoring systems. This project studies the advantages and disadvantages of interactive multimedia and intelligent tutoring systems, and analyses the ways of combining these technologies in search of an interesting, learnable, flexible, compelling and technology-enhanced educational tool. Educational packages need to be evaluated for effectiveness. When it comes to computer-based instruction, technical concerns such as multimedia effects are taken seriously and there is not enough emphasis on its educational value. There is not much concern about the appropriateness of the instruction method to the computer medium. This research proposes a framework for evaluating educational packages which include a number of issues. Several pieces of educational software were evaluated using this framework and Diagnosis for crop protection, a multimedia software package that aids in teaching the process of diagnosing crop problems, was selected for modification, as a practical application of the theoretical work. We studied different multimedia system development models and methodologies. We also analysed the cognitive issues and intelligent features that enhance the learnability. Finally, the appropriate intelligent features and other factors that could enhance Diagnosis for crop protection to be a more 'active knowledge constructing' environment have been identified. The current version of Diagnosis for crop protection was represented using an appropriate methodology and the proposed changes were described in detail

Rapid progress in low-cost commercial PC-class multimedia workstation technology will potentially have a dramatic impact on the productivity of distributed work groups of 50-100 software developers. Hypermedia/multimedia involves the seamless integration in a graphical user interface (GUI) of a wide variety of data structures, including high-resolution graphics, maps, images, voice, and full-motion video. Hypermedia will normally require the manipulation of large dynamic files for which relational data base technology and SQL servers are essential. Basic machine architecture, special-purpose video boards, video equipment, optical memory, software needed for animation, network technology, and the anticipated increase in productivity that will result for the introduction of hypermedia technology are covered. It is suggested that the cost of the hardware and software to support an individual multimedia workstation will be on the order of $10,000

The study reported here is part of an international project supported by EU (PEDACTICE - Educational Multimedia in Compulsory School: From Pedagogical Assessment to Product Assessment) and had as main goal to know the opinion and the perception of the Portuguese students about criteria of quality of educational multimedia software. In order to obtain elements on the student`s point of view about educational multimedia software, we decided to interview small groups of pupils who are involved in the work with multimedia materials and than gather, organize and analyse the information got. The sample of interviewed pupils can be considered as representative of the Lisbon schools attended by teachers and pupils very much interested in multimedia materials which these students use not only as an aid to learning activities but also as a support to home and school work. As main results of the study we can refer: a) the confirmation of the success of computers and multimedia among the young Portuguese student population, being manifest either in their attitudes or in the diversity of their experiences, including the technical mastery of informas; b) the acknowledgment, by the students, of the role of the school and of those of their teachers who had till now led the process; c) an unexpected emphasis attached by the students, mainly by the older ones, to the use of computer as a resource for school work which, till now, was done without it; and d) the rare use of the computer for supporting tasks of creative or autonomous nature.European Comissio

Research is underway to develop a multimedia learning about adolescent reproductive health by using Adobe Flash software. Multimedia learning is the use of computer-based media aspect of multimedia (text, images, sound, animation, video, etc.) which are assembled in such a way as to make a tutorial and assessment of adolescent reproductive health materials. This multimedia learning is expected to be one of the computer-based learning media of reproductive health, proper and suitable materials for teens. The development of multimedia learning method Research and Development which consists of 8 stages of the needs analysis phase, the design of media objects collecting, developing iproducts, expert validation, design revisions, feasibility testing, testing, revision and production. Multimedia learning is developed using Adobe Flash CS5. Software testing of multimedia learning is done with blackbox testing and whitebox testing. Testing was also conducted to test the feasibility and quality of multimedia. Feasibility testing conducted by a team of experts, while the quality performed by the end users target are students. The research was carried out at Mts N 1 Tempel, involving 10 students at the beginning of the trial and 30 students on a field trial. Instruments used in data collection is questionnaire with Likert and Guttman scale. The results of the testing indicate that the node whitebox and lines have been executed at least one time and done in accordance with the limitations. Blackbox testing results indicate the function of each run in accordance with its purpose. The results of a feasibility assessment by media experts gave an average 4,35 with categories Very Worthy. The results of a feasibility assessment by experts material showed an average 4:13 a category Worth. The first trial or alpha testing with scores 1.73 or in High quality. Field testing or beta testing to get pas 1:50 with High quality. The test results on the feasibility of the whole multimedia learning suggests categories Very Worthy and High quality, so that multimedia learning of adolescent reproductive health is fit for use as a media of learning.
