This paper presents the results of research in the valley of the river Lucido in the province of Massa-Carrara (MS), from the point of view of extensive analysis of architecture in historic centres. Through the detailed archaeological study of each of the constructions that make up these historic centres, using additional information obtained from archaeological excavations and written sources, a diachronic analysis can be made of the social history of the settling of the valley between the 11th and 20th centuries. Specific attention is also paid to configuration processes in the village network, their transformation in the Middle Ages and their later transformation in the modern era.No disponible

Nascoste in piena vista.
The study of majolica from the late Middle Ages allowed us to observe the relationship that is established, in this chronological context, between ceramics and writing. During the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries, together with the multiplication of decorative motifs – including, in line with the traditional theory of communication, Gothic letters and complex sentences – it is possible to observe the proliferation of unusual forms of writing. Through the study of these presences, it was possible to observe how they are carriers of three distinct degrees of communication. Some of these had to be able to transmit a wide-ranging message but needed a suitable cultural substrate for its reception, others could instead be understood only by a small group of individuals and, finally, others still seem completely devoid of a communicative will. However, as often happens, reality appears to be more complex than the scheme in which it is intended to be registered and for this reason, it will be necessary to observe and understand each circumstance in which these unusual types of writing were produced

Together with Venice, Genoa owned the best tradition in shipbuilding in the High and Late Middle Ages. This was made possible by the proximity of demand and supply factors to the places providing most of naval munitions: wood, iron and textiles. The written sources, mostly notary acts since the 12th century, present a few dozens of different ship-types and make it possible to localize the main dockyards, which were located between Genoa and Savona, and especially in Varazze. The paper sketches also the main differences in shipbuilding between Genoa and Venice
I Villaggi medievali abbandonati del Meilogu
In the middle-age Meilogu was the center of Sardinian historical, economical and settlement dynamics, especially in the context of the Judgedom of Torres. Etimology shows his centrality. The toponym Meilogu comes from the Latin Medium locum, which means “the place of the middle”, and It was the name of a “curatorial”, "territorial districts" in which the kingdom was divided.
This PhD thesis aims to investigate, with archaeological perspective and diachronic perspective, the evolution of the landscapes of settlements in the middle ages (VI-XIV a.D.).
In particular, the research focus is the phenomenon of “deserted villages”. Between the XIV and XV century a change of settlement involving all Europe and the historical conjuncture, led to the disappearance of thousands of villages; Sardinia was particularly affected by this phenomenon with the abandonment of about 50% of his settlements.
The deserted villages of Meilogu have been studied with the methods of Landscapes Archeology, combining the analysis of the written sources, geographic and cartographic to archaeological surveys, which had as its purpose the delimitation of archaeological sites of the medieval period.
The investigations have led to the knowledge of 30 medieval and post-medieval archaeological sites, mostly unknown; the settlement of this period is divided among different types (villages of varying size, domos, castles, isolated churches), with a variety unknown to written sources
