ESTIMATING THE IMPACTS OF DIFFERING PRICE-RISK MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES ON THE NET INCOME OF SALINAS VALLEY LETTUCE PRODUCERS: A STOCHASTIC SIMULATION APPROACH
While government safety-net programs are used to mitigate the price risk for commodity producers, limited programs exist for specialty crop producers. Specialty crop producers utilize forward contracts to reduce downside price risk. In order to estimate the method of price-risk management, if any, that is preferable to selling at market determined prices, a stochastic simulation model was constructed. The completed simulation model was used to estimate probability distributions for Salinas Valley net income under different pricing scenarios. Probabilities of reaching various net income thresholds were compared. Results indicate that Salinas Valley lettuce producers should maximize profitability by using forward contracts.Farm Management, Risk and Uncertainty,
1949 Salinas Basin Investigation, Basic Data Used in Bulletins 52, 52-A and 52-B
The 1949 Salinas Basin Investigation - Basic Data publication presented the previously unpublished basic data supporting the analyses and conclusions in Bulletins 52, 52-A and 52-B. The documents includes well descriptions in Salinas Valley, water levels at wells, quality of water, water levels at wells, quality of water, well logs, and maps depicting lands irrigated in Salinas Valley in 1945.https://digitalcommons.csumb.edu/hornbeck_cgb_1/1006/thumbnail.jp

A new Lyropecten (Pectinidae, Bivalvia, Mollusca) from the central California Miocene, USA
A new pectinid, Lyropecten terrysmithae n. sp., has been recognized in middle to late Miocene rock units referred to as the Monterey Formation and Santa Margarita Sandstone in the southern Salinas Valley, central California. Previously, L. terrysmithae had been identified as a flat form belonging to either L. estrellanus or L. catalinae, then more recently to Argopecten sp. The earlier assignments were based on its moderate size and a radial rib count nearly identical to these taxa. However, its hinge, flat unledged valves, looped lamellar growth lines, and hinge crura set L. terrysmithae apart from Argopecten and all species of Lyropecten. Localities where it occurs in the Salinas Valley that can be accurately dated are from the late middle to middle late Miocene âMargaritanâ California provincial molluscan stage. While L. terrysmithae has been collected at other sites, those localities lack diagnostic age-specific species necessary to determine an accurate geological age and maybe older
1900 - Conceptual and Historical 1900 Land Use and Development in Salinas Valley and Vicinity [Draft]
A digitized map created in 2017 representing land use and development in the Salinas Valley and vicinity in 1900. The map reflects private rancho; high probability of harming and Irrigation areas; land suitable for grazing cattle, sheep and horses with some agriculture; California native habitat (least developed lands); canals; railroads; pump houses, oil seep, population centers; 1898 USGS Monterey County Road & Historic El Camino Real; Salinas River Watershed; Township and Range; County boundary; historic Mission sites; springs; wetland, sloughs and lakes; intermittent stream or slough; Salinas River; as well as rivers and streams. Data sources include Bureau of Land Management General Office Records; 1905 Sugar Beet District maps; 1908-1912 USGS Salinas Valley maps; and âGeology and Oil Prospects of Salinas Valley-Parkfield Area, Californiaâ by Walter A. English (1915). [Details of 1900 conceptual map are downloadable as supplemental documents.]https://digitalcommons.csumb.edu/hornbeck_cgb_4/1014/thumbnail.jp

The intersections of agricultural capital, state violence and prison gangs in the Salinas Valley
The Salinas Valley has been a historically significant site of agricultural innovation and labor activism. Contemporarily, Salinas Valley faces rising violence, recording between twenty to forty homicides a year since 2011. This report examines the historic, socioeconomic conditions that enable rampant violence in this rural area by analyzing the intersections of violence, incarceration, and capitalist agriculture as they play out through a four billion dollar a year agribusiness in the historic carceral spaces of Salinas Valley.American Studie
1974 - Geology of the Southern Salinas Valley Area, California
This 1974 report about the geology of the southern Salinas Valley was concerned mainly with relating the occurrence of petroleum and other mineral commodities to the Cenozoic history of the area. The investigation had two phases. First phase involved detailed geologic mapping of quadrangles that cover most of Tertiary beds west of the Salinas River. Second phase included a reconnaissance geologic mapping to extend the results of the first phase to a larger area. The report summarizes results of the geologic investigation of the entire southern Salinas Valley area.https://digitalcommons.csumb.edu/hornbeck_cgb_1/1022/thumbnail.jp

2003, January - Salinas Valley Water Project Engineerâs Report
A 2003 Engineerâs Report describing the technical basis for a new assessment that would fund the capital, operation and maintenance costs of the Salinas Valley Water Project. The project would include the operation and maintenance of existing reservoirs, construction of the Nacimiento Dam Spillway Modifications, and construction of the Salinas River Diversion Facility. The project would be implemented by the Monterey County Resources Agency to meet the water supply goals of the Salinas Valley â halting seawater intrusion, continuing conservation of winter flows for recharge of the basin through summer releases, providing flood protection; improving long-term hydrologic balance between recharge and withdrawal, and providing a sufficient water supply to meet water needs through 2030.https://digitalcommons.csumb.edu/hornbeck_cgb_6_b/1000/thumbnail.jp
