A comparative study on communication structures of Chinese journals in the social sciences
We argue that the communication structures in the Chinese social sciences
have not yet been sufficiently reformed. Citation patterns among Chinese
domestic journals in three subject areas -- political science and marxism,
library and information science, and economics -- are compared with their
counterparts internationally. Like their colleagues in the natural and life
sciences, Chinese scholars in the social sciences provide fewer references to
journal publications than their international counterparts; like their
international colleagues, social scientists provide fewer references than
natural sciences. The resulting citation networks, therefore, are sparse.
Nevertheless, the citation structures clearly suggest that the Chinese social
sciences are far less specialized in terms of disciplinary delineations than
their international counterparts. Marxism studies are more established than
political science in China. In terms of the impact of the Chinese political
system on academic fields, disciplines closely related to the political system
are less specialized than those weakly related. In the discussion section, we
explore reasons that may cause the current stagnation and provide policy
recommendations
Impact of ICT on Social Science Faculty Membersâ Information Usage Pattern at Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan
Abstract
This study explores the growing effect of information and communication technology on information usage pattern of the faculty members of Social Science at Bahauddin Zakariya University Multan. The findings show that Internet has become a significance source for the faculty members and researchers as they use internet for education purposes, research work and updating knowledge. Google, Yahoo and MSN are widely used search engines and majority of the respondentsâ donât use the Excite, Snake, Kapok and Alta vista. Faculty members frequently use Science Direct to seek relevant information for their research. The problems include that Internet facility, digitized materials and audio visual materials are not provided in most departmental libraries of faculty of Social Sciences. The study suggests that information literacy programmes should be provided in every departmental library of Faculty of Social Sciences. Professional staff should be recruited in the departmental libraries of Social Sciences. Internet service, reference service, abstracting and indexing services should be provided by the departmental libraries for maximum usersâ satisfaction
An investigation of digital scholarship and disciplinary culture in Oman
The purpose of this study is to investigate disciplinary differences in the use of networked information for research and scholarly communication at Sultan Qaboos University, Oman. The study produced quantitative data on how and why academics within different disciplines utilise networked information either made available internally through the university library, or externally through services accessed by the Internet. A questionnaire survey was conducted with academic staff at Sultan Qaboos University. Statistical analysis found a number of significant differences between respondents in the science disciplines and those in the social sciences and humanities with regard to their use of, and attitudes towards, digital information services. While respondents from science disciplines show overall longer and more frequent use of networked information, respondents from humanities and social sciences indicated more positive attitudes toward library networked services. The Arab country context presents a challenge in determining the degree to which results can be extrapolated to other environments, in that disciplines are also divided by language. Science disciplines teach in English, and the social science and humanities in Arabic. While similar studies have been undertaken in developed countries, this study is an attempt to establish some data for a developing Arab country
This article introduces the concept of information practice. After analysing it, in relation to the notions of « information seeking and use » and « information behaviour », it offers a reviewing of its evolution through the different scientific trends, such as social informatics, library and information science and sociology of use, which have contributed to its elaboration. Lastly, the paper discusses the possible contribution of communication science in renewing information models
Internet Services for Exploring Social Science Resources
Internet has wrought dramatic changes in the generation, communication and dissemination of social science information. Internet is also a self-publishing media and not a library of evaluated publications. Hence everything must be analyzed for its appropriateness for use.
Increasing use of the Internet for communication and phenomenal increase of Internet resources stimulates different types of services. These services differ in potentialities to meet users needs in communicating, accessing, and disseminating data, information and other resources including computer files. Addresses of selective sites provide glimpses of current Indian activities in social sciences on the Internet. The âInternetâ is a communication channel consists of large number of interconnected computers. Each computer with individual IP addresses can exchange digitized information with any or all connected computer. Advantages of the Internet are its speed, timeliness, and ability to communicate instantaneously and availability of free information and freeware/shareware. It reduces barriers to publishing, facilitates quick revision of documents, and makes information easily available universally. âMoving wallâ principle affects long-term availability of resources. Increasing use of the Internet for communication and phenomenal increase of Internet resources stimulate different types of services like E-mail, Mailing Lists, Usenet, WWW, Telnet and FTP. Examines potentialities of these services to meet users needs in accessing, communicating and disseminating data, information and other resources including computer files. Addresses of selective sites provide glimpses of current Indian activities in social sciences on the Internet
Characteristics of LIS Research Articles Affecting Their Citation Impact
The paper analyses the citation impact of Library and Information Science,
LIS for short, research articles published in 31 leading international LIS
journals in 2015. The main research question is: to what degree do authors'
disciplinary composition in association with other content characteristics of
LIS articles affect their citation impact? The impact is analysed in terms of
the number of citations received and their authority, using outlier
normalization and subfield normalization. The article characteristics analysed
using quantitative content analysis include topic, methodology, type of
contribution, and the disciplinary composition of their author teams. The
citations received by the articles are traced from 2015 to May 2021. Citing
document authority is measured by the citations they had received up to May
2021. The overall finding was that authors' disciplinary composition is
significantly associated with citation scores. The differences in citation
scores between disciplinary compositions appeared typically within information
retrieval and scientific communication. In both topics LIS and computer science
jointly received significantly higher citation scores than many disciplines
like LIS alone or humanities in information retrieval, or natural sciences,
medicine, or social sciences alone in scientific communication. The paper is
original in allowing joint analysis of content, authorship composition, and
impact.Comment: 30 pages, 4 figure
Redefining Library Partnerships: Sharing Physical and Digital Space with the Campus Community
Cal Poly State University librarians are engaging faculty, staff and students by transforming physical and digital library spaces to better support teaching and learning. A Science Café program hosted in the Learning Commons Library Café provides informal opportunities to come together over coffee, share current faculty research, and make salient the connections that exist between the numerous and seemingly unrelated areas of study on campus: science, humanities and the social sciences. The campus institutional repository (IR), DigitalCommons@CalPoly, is an ever-growing digital archive of faculty research, student work and campus documents which has facilitated new collaborations between faculty, campus constituents and the library and has elevated the visibility of faculty and student research. Sharing of physical and digital space provides for dynamic, campus-centered programs and initiatives bringing together technology, information, and people to create a myriad of connections. These initiatives are redefining physical and digital library spaces, catalyzing renewed interest in the library and fostering communication and connections on campus
Evaluation of Professor Jafar Mehrad's Scientific Collaborations in Library and Information Science from 1974 to 2021
Communication is the most fundamental process in research; therefore, scientific communication is the main center of the growth and development of the scientific community. Scientific communication means how scientists in each discipline can disseminate their information and knowledge through formal and informal channels. This is usually done through various media such as books, articles, conference papers, etc. This research has been conducted to investigate the scientific collaborations of Dr. Mehrad, âas an impressive specialistâ of knowledge and information science in Iran, using the bibliometric method. The findings showed that about 180 works (including 57 books, 52 Persian articles, 22 English articles, 11 research projects and 38 dissertations) had been published by him. The study of Dr. Mehrad's scientific collaborations showed that 27.8% of the works were published as single authors and 72.2% as the group works. Dr. Dayani is at the top of his scientific colleagues with the publication of 9 works. The journals "Library and Information Science", "Social Sciences and Humanities of Shiraz University", "Information Processing and Management," and" Journal of Academic librarianship and information research" were the four journals in which most of Dr. Mehrad's works were published. The fields of "Library and Information Science", "Databases", "Shiraz University", and "Evaluation" are the core topics in which most of his works have been published.https://dorl.net/dor/20.1001.1.20088302.2022.20.4.5.
