    UConnRCMPy: Python-based data analysis for rapid compression machines

    The ignition delay of a fuel/air mixture is an important quantity in designing combustion devices, and these data are also used to validate chemical kinetic models for combustion. One of the typical experimental devices used to measure the ignition delay is called a Rapid Compression Machine (RCM). This paper presents UConnRCMPy, an open-source Python package to process experimental data from the RCM at the University of Connecticut. Given an experimental measurement, UConnRCMPy computes the thermodynamic conditions in the reaction chamber of the RCM during an experiment along with the ignition delay. UConnRCMPy implements an extensible framework, so that alternative experimental data formats can be incorporated easily. In this way, UConnRCMPy improves the consistency of RCM data processing and enables the community to reproduce data analysis procedures.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, presented at the 10th US National Combustion Meetin

    Numerical analysis of rapid drawdown: applications in real cases

    In this study, rapid drawdown scenarios were analyzed by means of numerical examples as well as modeling of real cases with in situ measurements. The aim of the study was to evaluate different approaches available for calculating pore water pressure distributions during and after a drawdown. To do that, a single slope subjected to a drawdown was first analyzed under different calculation alternatives, and numerical results were discussed. Simple methods, such as undrained analysis and pure flow analysis, implicitly assuming a rigid soil skeleton, lead to significant errors in pore water pressure distributions when compared with coupled flow-deformation analysis. A similar analysis was performed for the upstream slope of the Glen Shira Dam, Scotland, and numerical results were compared with field measurements during a controlled drawdown. Field records indicate that classical undrained calculations are conservative but unrealistic. Then, a recent case of a major landslide triggered by a rapid drawdown in a reservoir was interpreted. A key aspect of the case was the correct characterization of permeability of a representative soil profile. This was achieved by combining laboratory test results and a back analysis of pore water pressure time records during a period of reservoir water level fluctuations. The results highlight the difficulty of predicting whether the pore water pressure is overestimated or underestimated when using simplified approaches, and it is concluded that predicting the pore water pressure distribution in a slope after a rapid drawdown requires a coupled flow-deformation analysis in saturated and unsaturated porous media.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Rapid steady-state analysis of CLL resonant power converters

    Cyclic averaging techniques are applied to the CLL resonant power converter to provide steady-state converter characteristics for rapid stress analysis. This is shown to facilitate the determination of mode duties and initial conditions through knowledge of the operational modes of the rectifier at various operating frequencies. Comparisons are made with FMA-based cyclic analyses, and Spice simulations, that show, respectively, improved accuracy and vastly improved execution speeds

    Analysis of free analyte fractions by rapid affinity chromatography

    The invention is generally directed toward an analytical method to determine the concentration of the free analyte fraction in a sample. More particularly, the method encompasses applying a sample comprising a free and bound analyte fraction to an affinity column capable of selectively extracting the free fraction in the millisecond time domain. The signal generated by the free fraction is then quantified by standard analytical detection techniques. The concentration of the free fraction may then be determined by comparison of its signal with that of a calibration curve depicting the signal of known concentration of the same analyte

    Rapid automatized naming and reading performance: a meta-analysis

    Evidence that rapid naming skill is associated with reading ability has become increasingly prevalent in recent years. However, there is considerable variation in the literature concerning the magnitude of this relationship. The objective of the present study was to provide a comprehensive analysis of the evidence on the relationship between rapid automatized naming (RAN) and reading performance. To this end, we conducted a meta-analysis of the correlational relationship between these 2 constructs to (a) determine the overall strength of the RAN-reading association and (b) identify variables that systematically moderate this relationship. A random-effects model analysis of data from 137 studies (857 effect sizes; 28,826 participants) indicated a moderate-to-strong relationship between RAN and reading performance (r = .43, I-2 = 68.40). Further analyses revealed that RAN contributes to the 4 measures of reading (word reading, text reading, non-word reading, and reading comprehension), but higher coefficients emerged in favor of real word reading and text reading. RAN stimulus type and type of reading score were the factors with the greatest moderator effect on the magnitude of the RAN-reading relationship. The consistency of orthography and the subjects' grade level were also found to impact this relationship, although the effect was contingent on reading outcome. It was less evident whether the subjects' reading proficiency played a role in the relationship. Implications for future studies are discussed

    Operations analysis of gravity assisted rapid transit

    Gravity assisted rapid transit (GART) with 6 percent grades before and after each station are compared with conventional systems in terms of energy consumption, run time, line capacity and schedule stability under abnormal circumstances. Parametric analyses of run times and energy consumption include the impact of alternate accelerating and braking levels. The capcity analysis uses a network simulation program to determine the location and severity of all signal delays. Based on results of initial simulations, the block design was revised to eliminate bottlenecks in normal operations. The systems are then compared at headways of 80 to 180 seconds. One month of incidence reports of a modern operating transit system are reviewed to determine the failures to be simulated. The impact of failures resulting in station delays (30 to 360 seconds), speed limit reduction (20 mph and 30 mph to one or more trains), vehicle performance (75 percent acceleration) are compared at scheduled headway of 90 to 180 seconds
