Nothing Has Changed Since Yesterday, Why the Role of Social Media in Radicalization is more Complex than it Seems

In recent years there has been a seeming resurgence of political radicalism such as the alt-right and openly socialist groups that have coalesced around former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. This sudden resurgence of radicalism has often been blamed on Social Media and its perceived ability to create echo chambers and help these groups organize. The goal of this paper is to refute the idea that social media is the sole cause of this recent wave of radicalism by building a framework of radicalization agnostic of social media, and then to explore how social media interacts with that framework. The paper then provides potential solutions for reforming social media platforms to minimize what role they do have in radicalizatio

The growth of counter-terrorism efforts has been reported in a number of scholarly studies. These studies have also reported a shift in efforts to prevent future terrorism towards targeting potential future terrorists and preventing them from becoming radicalized, particularly in the Western world. The importance of evidence-based interventions is commonly stressed in the policy processes involved in installing interventions that have the aim of countering/preventing violent extremism (C/PVE). However, there is a lack of knowledge about the state of the evidence for interventions within this field. The objective of this scoping review was to map the evidence base for P/CVE interventions as reported in scholarly studies. We searched multiple databases using search terms related to violent extremism, terrorism and prevention to assess the research describing interventions for C/PVE. A total of 111 publications were included in the study. The interventions identified were most commonly implemented at the national level. Only 38 publications mentioned any kind of outcome and only two publications evaluated the comparative effectiveness of the interventions. The outcomes evaluated were knowledge and attitudes - outcomes without direct relevance for C/PVE. In conclusion, there is a lack of evidence-based interventions that focus on C/PVE. Future research should focus on evaluating the comparative effectiveness of outcomes that are relevant to C/PVE in order to fill this knowledge gap

The main topics of the conference (2019) during the two days were: inclusion of Tunisian youth and its impact on preventing and mitigating Violent Extremism, and; the dilemma of the returning Tunisian Foreign Fighters. Findings are from the first phase of the research. Historically, religion has influenced traditions and social norms. However, societal conservatism has substituted religion. According to the research participants, community influence along with traditions and social norms are the basis of conservatism. Civic Engagement can provide a sense of belonging to a community of youth and help them maintain personal and professional skills

V uvodnem delu diplomskega dela sem predstavil identifikacijo problema, cilje, raziskovalno vprašanje in metodologijo. The purpose of the this doploma is to analyze the terrorist organizations Boko Haram and Al Shabaab and then compare them with each other on selected indicators. Both organizations are responsible for terrorist acts that have caused large numbers of deaths, injuries, refugees, internally displaced persons, etc. The growing trend of terrorist attacks remains a major security challenge for policy makers in Africa, and consequently the presence of the international community has increased. In the introductory part of the diploma work, I presented the problem identification, goals, research question and methodology. I went on to describe basic concepts such as terrorism, religious terrorism, extremism, radicalization, and jihadism and then analyzed the terrorist organizations Boko Haram and Al Shabaab based on selected indicators. In the last part of the diploma, I compared the organizationd and finally answered the research question. I have found that the terrorist organizations Boko Haram and Al Shabaab, which are very similar at first glance, are in fact different. It is true that they have similar ideologies, but on closer analysis and comparison we can see that there are significant differences, for example in their very origin, as well as in funding and recruitment

Hate is being reinvented. Over the last two decades, online platforms have been used to repackage racist, sexist and xenophobic ideologies into new sociotechnical forms. Digital hate is ancient but novel, deploying the Internet to boost its allure and broaden its appeal. To understand the logic of hate, the author investigates four objects: 8chan, the cesspool of the Internet, QAnon, the popular meta-conspiracy, Parler, a social media site, and Gab, the "platform for the people." Drawing together powerful human stories with insights from media studies, psychology, political science, and race and cultural studies, he portrays how digital hate infiltrates hearts and minds

European Citizens: Empowering European Civil Society Through Culture?

With regard to the rich cultural diversity within the EU, the concept of transculturality – which is about “creating value across borders” – will be of crucial importance for the future of societal transactions and relations in an increasingly globalized world, as well as an EU increasingly marked by populist movements and diverging national interests.Whether top-down initiatives by the EU can be a way of addressing such changing dynamics through empowering its civil society was the starting point of this research. (...) This chapter will add a valuable perspective at the European institutional level and the EU’s efforts to engage with European civil society in very diverse contexts so as to better understand the connection between the European ‘state’ and its citizens. With culture being an empowering tool enabling dialogue and social cohesion, we believe that it can play a crucial role for CSOs. Using the case of a large-scale Social Community Theatre (SCT) project under the Creative Europe programme 2014-2020 through the lens of conceptual theories on transculturality, we ask the following questions:- Is a transcultural understanding and approach to top-down management adopted by the Commission and, accordingly, are transcultural processes at the level of civil society actively encouraged by the EU through the means of funding cultural projects?- (How) Do such programmes enhance the creation of relations between citizens, CSOs and the European institutions, and of shared values and a sense of belonging among European citizens?- Can the observed relations be defined as transcultural?- What is the role of CSOs in these processes? Finally, we discuss how a deeper adoption of the transcultural approach in a sense of transcultural management, both by the EU institutions and beneficiary projects, could enhance EU projects with CSOs, and if EU-funded culture projects engaging CSOs could help to create and strengthen transcultural relations across Europe in a more decentralized and bottom-up manner
