Does Outsourcing Increase Profitability?
We investigate the relationship between outsourcing and profitability paying particular attention to the endogeneity of outsourcing. The empirical analysis uses unique plant level data for the electronics sector in Ireland. A particular feature of the data is that it records detailed information for 12 electronics sub-sectors covering both manufacturing and services activities. We distinguish outsourcing of materials from outsourcing of services inputs. We find that plants that are substantially larger than the mean employment size benefit from outsourcing materials while this does not appear to be the case for small plants. Results for outsourcing of services are not as clear-cut, however.

Personal Food Computer: A new device for controlled-environment agriculture
Due to their interdisciplinary nature, devices for controlled-environment
agriculture have the possibility to turn into ideal tools not only to conduct
research on plant phenology but also to create curricula in a wide range of
disciplines. Controlled-environment devices are increasing their
functionalities as well as improving their accessibility. Traditionally,
building one of these devices from scratch implies knowledge in fields such as
mechanical engineering, digital electronics, programming, and energy
management. However, the requirements of an effective controlled environment
device for personal use brings new constraints and challenges. This paper
presents the OpenAg Personal Food Computer (PFC); a low cost desktop size
platform, which not only targets plant phenology researchers but also
hobbyists, makers, and teachers from elementary to high-school levels (K-12).
The PFC is completely open-source and it is intended to become a tool that can
be used for collective data sharing and plant growth analysis. Thanks to its

Age, technology and labour Costs
Is the process of workforce aging a burden or a blessing for the firm? Our paper seeks to answer this question by providing evidence on the ageproductivity and age-earnings profiles for a sample of plants in three manufacturing industries (“forest”, “industrial machinery” and “electronics”) in Finland. Our main result is that exposure to rapid technological and managerial changes does make a difference for plant productivity, less so for wages. In electronics, the Finnish industry undergoing a major technological and managerial shock in the 1990s, the response of productivity to age-related variables is first sizably positive and then becomes sizably negative as one looks at plants with higher average seniority and experience. This declining part of the curve is not there either for the forest industry or for industrial machinery. It is not there either for wages in electronics. These conclusions survive when a host of other plausible productivity determinants (notably, education and plant vintage) are included in the analysis. The electronics industry in central and eastern Europe: an emerging production location in the alignment of networks perspective
This paper analyses the emergence of central Europe as a new location for the production of electronics. The main factors that drive integration in the region into global production networks are also analysed, as well as prospects for upgrading the industry by using network alignment perspectives.
Foreign investment is the primary vehicle of integration of CEE electronics firms into global production networks, and Hungary has moved furthest along this path, positioning itself as a major low-cost supply base in the region. Czech and Polish electronics industries are connected, in smaller, but increasing, degrees to international electronics production networks. Networks that are being built in CEE in electronics are usually confined to subsidiaries with still limited local subcontracting; they are export-oriented and are expanding.
Local subsidiaries have mastered production capabilities and several subsidiaries in Hungary are European mandate suppliers in their respective lines of business. EU demand is the main pull factor, which gives cohesion to the actions of MNCs as well as to the action of local and national governments in CEE. The layer of local firms is still very weak with very limited capabilities in core technologies. This is the key weakness which prevents further alignment of networks in CEE electronics. Local governments play an important role in working jointly with foreign investors in establishing industrial parks and new capacities
Comparison of different repetitive control architectures: synthesis and comparison. Application to VSI Converters
Repetitive control is one of the most used control approaches to deal with periodic references/disturbances. It owes its properties to the inclusion of an internal model in the controller that corresponds to a periodic signal generator. However, there exist many different ways to include this internal model. This work presents a description of the different schemes by means of which repetitive control can be implemented. Flexible workforces and low profit margins: electronics assembly between Europe and China
This book investigates restructuring in the electronics industry and in
particular the impact of a \u2018Chinese\u2019 labour regime on work and employ -
ment practices in electronics assembly in Europe.1 Electronics is an
extremely dynamic sector, characterized by an ever-changing organi -
zational structure, as well as cut-throat competition, particularly in
manufacturing. Located primarily in East Asia, electronics assembly has
become notorious for poor working conditions, low unionisation and
authoritarian labour relations. However, hostile labour relations and topdown
HR policies are not unique to East Asia. They have become
associated with the way the sector is governed more broadly, with a
number of Western companies also coming to rely on such practices
Robust H8 design for resonant control in a CVCF inverter application over load uncertainties
CVCF (constant voltage, constant frequency) inverters are electronic devices used to supply AC loads from DC storage elements such as batteries or photovoltaic cells. These devices are used to feed different kinds of loads; this uncertainty requires that the controller fulfills robust stability conditions while keeping required performance. To address this, a robust H8 design is proposed based on resonant control to track a pure sinusoidal voltage signal and to reject the most common harmonic signals in a wide range of loads. The design is based on the definition of performance bounds in error signal and weighting functions for covering most uncertainty ranges in loads. A modular FPGA-based ultrasonic array system for applications including non-destructive testing
This paper reports work aimed at the development of an ultrasonic imaging system comprising modular, reprogrammable building blocks, or tiles, which can be customised for multiple applications, including and within non-destructive testing (NDT), by the user. The key component is an autonomous module containing the ultrasonic array and all the electronics necessary to operate it. This contrasts with most previous research on system integration which has focused only on the transducer and front-end electronics.<p></p>
In the present work, a 4 4 element 2D piezoelectric array with a 16 mm 16 mm aperture has been produced, with the entire transmission and reception electronics within the same footprint. The proximity of the transducer array and electronics removes the need for cabling, reducing signal degradation due to cross talk and interference. In addition, it avoids the problem of electrical impedance matching of cable between the array elements and the electronics. <p></p>
Pulse-echo insertion loss of 48 dB has been measured from back-wall reflections in 73 mm-thick aluminium without decoding, and results with decoded signals show adequate signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) with 3.3 V excitation at an operating frequency of 1.2 MHz, within the range required for deep penetration in nuclear power plant. <p></p>
Crucially, the ability to construct 2D arrays of any size and shape from generic building blocks represents a departure from almost all previous work in ultrasound, which has traditionally been highly application specific. This may allow ultrasonic NDT to be used in applications for which the investment in customised devices could not previously be justified. <p></p>
An evolutionary stage model of outsourcing and competence destruction : a Triad comparison of the consumer electronics industry
Outsourcing has gained much prominence in managerial practice and academic discussions in the last two decades or so. Yet, we still do not understand the full implications of outsourcing strategy for corporate performance. Traditionally outsourcing across borders is explained as a cost-cutting exercise, but more recently the core competency argument states that outsourcing also leads to an increased focus, thereby improving effectiveness. However, no general explanation has so far been provided for how outsourcing could lead to deterioration in a firm‟s competence base. We longitudinally analyze three cases of major consumer electronics manufacturers, Emerson Radio from the U.S., Japan‟s Sony and Philips from the Netherlands to understand the dynamic process related to their sourcing strategies. We develop an evolutionary stage model that relates outsourcing to competence development inside the firm and shows that a vicious cycle may emerge. Thus it is appropriate to look not only at how outsourcing is influenced by an organization‟s current set of competences, but also how it alters that set over time. The four stages of the model are offshore sourcing, phasing out, increasing dependence on foreign suppliers, and finally industry exit or outsourcing reduction. The evolutionary stage model helps managers understand for which activities and under which conditions outsourcing across borders is not a viable option.
Results suggest that each of these firms had faced a loss of manufacturing competitiveness in its home country, to which it responded by offshoring and then outsourcing production. When a loss of competences occurred, some outsourcing decisions were reversed
