'Second-wave' black feminist periodicals in Britain

This article offers a long overdue exploration of black feminist periodicals in the UK during the period of second-wave feminism. In it, the author examines four feminist periodicals—FOWAAD, Speak Out, We Are Here and Mukti—in order to trace the development of black feminism in Britain and to investigate the extent to which black feminist periodicals in the UK became key sites for the development of a black feminist political critique that was aimed at three targets: the (white) feminist movement, the racist British state, and patriarchal structures within migrant communities. Insisting on the interconnected nature of gendered, race and class oppression in a manner that foreshadowed many contemporary theoretical developments around the politics of intersectionality, these periodicals provide vital insights into the black women’s movement and its complicated relationship to larger radical black movements and the concept of ‘political blackness’

Accessing the content of nineteenth-century periodicals: the Science in the Nineteenth-Century Periodical project

Nineteenth-century periodicals significantly outnumber books from that era, and present historians with an immensely valuable set of sources, but their use is constrained by the difficulty of identifying relevant material. For many periodicals, contents pages and volume indexes have been the only guide, and the few subject indexes that exist usually provide only an indication of the subjects mentioned in the article titles. By contrast, the Science in the Nineteenth-Century Periodical project (SciPer) indexed the science content of general-interest periodicals by skim-reading the entire text. The project’s approach to indexing is described and the relative merits of indexing and digitization in aiding researchers to locate relevant material are discussed. The article concludes that, notwithstanding the more sophisticated search interfaces of more recent retrodigitization projects, human indexing still has an important role to play in providing access to the content of historic periodicals and in mapping their data structure

Periodicals Collection Management: Organizing, Creating, and Maintaining a System

This paper examines Providence College’s experience in organizing, creating, and implementing the library’s collection management system, including how and why we chose Microsoft Access®, involved non-periodicals library staff in each phase, worked with existing periodicals information to form the basis for the collection management system, decided which information/fields to include, and retrieved/compiled the necessary information about each title by comparing our existing records to what was physically on the shelf. We also discuss how we used the collection management system to solicit input into collection management decisions such as cancellations and retention, create detailed reports with a variety of information, provide the information required for the periodicals integration project that combined the previously separate humanities and science collections into one collection as part of the library renovation project, manage the temporary division of the collection into three locations as part of the library renovation project, and assist academic departments in managing periodical titles in their respective areas

'Rebellious Highlanders': the reception of Corsica in the Edinburgh periodical press, 1730-1800

Examines the way Scottish periodicals, especially the Weekly Magazine and the Caledonian Mercury, reported and discussed the nationalist resistance in Corsica against first Genoese and then French rule; recalibrates the role of James Boswell in shaping Scottish opinion about Corsica, especially in his Account of Corsica (1768); notes the parallels made by Scottish commentators between the Corsican resistance under Pascal Paoli and the Scottish highlands, especially the Jacobite risings of 1715 and 1745; and suggests the value of looking at the distinctive responses of Scottish periodicals, not just the print networks based on London
