Assessment of a satellite power system and six alternative technologies
The satellite power system is assessed in comparison to six alternative technologies. The alternatives are: central-station terrestrial photovoltaic systems, conventional coal-fired power plants, coal-gasification/combined-cycle power plants, light water reactor power plants, liquid-metal fast-breeder reactors, and fusion. The comparison is made regarding issues of cost and performance, health and safety, environmental effects, resources, socio-economic factors, and institutional issues. The criteria for selecting the issues and the alternative technologies are given, and the methodology of the comparison is discussed. Brief descriptions of each of the technologies considered are included
Cloud and ice in the planetary scale circulation and in climate
The roles of the cryosphere, and of cloud-radiative interactions are investigated. The effects clouds and ice have in the climate system are examined. The cloud radiation research attempts explain the modes of interaction (feedback) between raditive transfer, cloud formation, and atmospheric dynamics. The role of sea ice in weather and climate is also discussed. Models are used to describe the ice and atmospheric dynamics under study
Biology, fisheries and culture of tropical groupers and snappers
Groupers and snappers are important fishery resources of the tropics and subtropics, where their high values have caused most of their stocks to be heavily exploited, some even to the point of collapse. Trends towards heavy demand and decreasing natural supply, which are accelerating in several parts of the world, prompted various mariculture ventures. Focused research on biology and the population dynamics of groupers and snappers, and on their reproduction and growth under controlled condition will remain essential for dealing with the questions on how to better manage their fisheries. Toward Regional Characterizations of the Oceanic Internal Wavefield
Many major oceanographic internal wave observational programs of the last 4
decades are reanalyzed in order to characterize variability of the deep ocean
internal wavefield. The observations are discussed in the context of the
universal spectral model proposed by Garrett and Munk. The Garrett and Munk
model is a good description of wintertime conditions at Site-D on the
continental rise north of the Gulf Stream. Elsewhere and at other times,
significant deviations in terms of amplitude, separability of the 2-D vertical
wavenumber - frequency spectrum, and departure from the model's functional form
are noted. Subtle geographic patterns are apparent in deviations from the high
frequency and high vertical wavenumber power laws of the Garrett and Munk
spectrum. Moreover, such deviations tend to co-vary: whiter frequency spectra
are partnered with redder vertical wavenumber spectra. Attempts are made to
interpret the variability in terms of the interplay between generation,
propagation and nonlinearity using a statistical radiative balance equation.
This process frames major questions for future research with the insight that
such integrative studies could constrain both observationally and theoretically
based interpretations

Technology Transfer at the Department of Energy Laboratories -Selected Case Studies from the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory
The U.S. Department of Energy has, by transfer from the U.S. Energy and Research Development Administration, continued the policy of programs for dissemination of information. By the language of the charter, this extends to scientific, technical and practical information. Thus, DOE has a statutory responsibility to ensure full and widespread transfer of its technology.
Each Laboratory conducts its own Technology Transfer Program as an integral part of the National Program, and the activities of the Laboratories are directed towards the National Goals. Because of specific and sometimes different needs in the various geographical regions and the different styles of technology transfer, the methods used by each DOE Laboratory to achieve technology transfer vary. This paper describes the DOE Laboratory Technology Transfer Programs and, in general terms, some of the activities of the various participants. In addition, a discussion of some of Lawrence Livermore Laboratory\u27s accomplishments in technology transfer is presented
Analysis of nuclear waste disposal in space, phase 3. Volume 2: Technical report
The options, reference definitions and/or requirements currently envisioned for the total nuclear waste disposal in space mission are summarized. The waste form evaluation and selection process is documented along with the physical characteristics of the iron nickel-base cermet matrix chosen for disposal of commercial and defense wastes. Safety aspects of radioisotope thermal generators, the general purpose heat source, and the Lewis Research Center concept for space disposal are assessed as well as the on-pad catastrophic accident environments for the uprated space shuttle and the heavy lift launch vehicle. The radionuclides that contribute most to long-term risk of terrestrial disposal were determined and the effects of resuspension of fallout particles from an accidental release of waste material were studied. Health effects are considered. Payload breakup and rescue technology are discussed as well as expected requirements for licensing, supporting research and technology, and safety testing
