Numerical and experimental study on flexible blade for tilt-body drones

    Get PDF
This paper is concerned with the evaluation of design techniques, both for the propulsive performance and for the structural behavior of a composite flexible proprotor. A numerical model was developed using a combination of aerodynamic model based on Blade Element Momentum Theory (BEMT), and structural model based on anisotropic beam finite element, in order to evaluate the coupled structural and the aerodynamic characteristics of the deformable proprotor blade. The numerical model was then validated by means of static performance measurements and shape reconstruction from Laser Distance Sensor (LDS) outputs. From the validation results of both aerodynamic and structural model, it can be concluded that the numerical approach developed by the authors is valid as a reliable tool for designing and analyzing the drone proprotor made of composite material. The proposed experiment technique is also capable of providing a predictive and reliable data in blade geometry and performance for rotor modes. Mots clefs

Numerical Whirl–Flutter analysis of a tiltrotor semi-span wind tunnel model

    Get PDF
AbstractThis work presents the modeling and preliminary Whirl–Flutter stability results achieved within the Advanced Testbed for TILtrotor Aeroelastics (ATTILA) CleanSky2 project. The project addresses the design, manufacturing, and testing of a semi-span wind-tunnel model of the Next Generation Civil TiltRotor. The preliminary multibody models developed in support of the wind-tunnel testbed design are described, illustrating the modeling technique of each subcomponent of the model, namely the wing, the rotor, the blades, and the yoke. The methodologies used to analyze the stability of systems subjected to periodic aerodynamic excitation when the problem is modeled using full-featured multibody solvers are presented in support of Whirl–Flutter identification during wind-tunnel testing.</jats:p

While many have worked on the transition phases of more popular hybrid aerial vehicle configurations, In this paper, we explore a novel multi-mode hybrid Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). Due to its expanded flying range and adaptability, hybrid aerial vehicles—which integrates two or more operating configurations—have become more and more widespread. The stages of transition between these modes are reasonably important whether there are two or more flight forms present. Whereas numerous have worked on the early stages of more widely used hybrid aerial vehicle types, in this paper a brand-new multi-mode hybrid UAV will be investigated. In order to fully exploit the vehicle's propulsion equipment and aerodynamic surfaces in both a horizontal cruising configuration and a vertical hovering configuration, we combine a tailless fixed-wing with a four-wing monocopter. By increasing construction integrity over the whole operational range, this lowers drag and wasteful mass when the aircraft is in motion in both modes. The transformation between the two flight states can be carried out in midair with just its current flying actuators and sensors. Through a ground controller, this vehicle may be operated by an Android device

Epoxy resins show a combination of thermal stability, good mechanical performance, and durability, which make these materials suitable for many applications in the Aerospace industry. Different types of curing agents can be utilized for curing epoxy systems. The use of aliphatic amines as curing agent is preferable over the toxic aromatic ones, though their incorporation increases the flammability of the resin. Recently, we have developed different hybrid strategies, where the sol-gel technique has been exploited in combination with two DOPO-based flame retardants and other synergists or the use of humic acid and ammonium polyphosphate to achieve non-dripping V-0 classification in UL 94 vertical flame spread tests, with low phosphorous loadings (e.g., 1-2 wt%). These strategies improved the flame retardancy of the epoxy matrix, without any detrimental impact on the mechanical and thermal properties of the composites. Finally, the formation of a hybrid silica-epoxy network accounted for the establishment of tailored interphases, due to a better dispersion of more polar additives in the hydrophobic resin
