The Ideal Museum vs. The Real Museum: How do Museums in Western New York Implement Preventive Conservation?

    Get PDF
This thesis examines the need for preventive conservation in museums. Preventive conservation is an effort aimed at reducing damage and deterioration to collections by improving the environment. Out of the 4.8 billion objects in the museum collections in the United States, many of the objects are in need of some attention. They are at high risk of being lost forever, leaving future generations without such collection to learn from and enjoy. This thesis studies five institutions in the Western New York area. It examines how their preventive conservation practices hold up to standards put forth by museum experts. There are four stages in the research model and they are as follows: (1) identifying threats to collections, (2) substantiating the risk, (3) identifying cost-efficient means of measuring the risk, and (4) developing methods to reduce or eliminate risk. Once a museum has implemented these four stages, the next step is rather simple: monitor and control the principal agents of destruction. By knowing which of these areas are in the most need of the greatest assistance, conservators can make recommendations to help institutions take better care of their collections

Hilkka Hiiop: The Artist’s Fingerprint. The conservation and technical examination of Johann Köler’s fresco Come unto Me, All
Keywords: fresco painting, artist’s technique, artistic practice, technical conditions of th e painting, conservationSummary:The article focuses on the artist’s technique in Johann Köler’s apse painting in the fresco technique, and the resulting conservation problems. In 2013, a technical examination was made and conservation-restoration work carried out on the altarpiece by Johan Köler in the apse of Kaarli Church in Tallinn. This was the first complete conservation of the painting since its completion. In order to conduct the conservation work, scaffolding was installed in front of the painting, which is locatedat a height that is normally inaccessible. In addition to making the conservation work possible, this also made it possible to conduct a thorough technical examination of the work. Since, in the local context, this is a unique painting in fresco technique, the wet layer of plaster had stored a large amount of information. “Reading” of this information provides insight into the artist’s work methods and an interpretation of the marks left by the author. In the course of the research, the following features were identified: the artist’s handprint pressed into the wet plaster, the time sequence of the execution of the painting, the number of individual plaster areas, the location of the structural lines used in the preparation of the work, the various methods used to transfer the outlines from the 1:1 cartoons, etc.CV:Hilkka Hiiop (PhD) is head of Conservation Departement in Art Museum of Estonia and responsible of contemporary art conservation in Kumu Art Museum. She is also assistant professor and coordinator of the artefact conservation branch at the Estonian Academy of Art, Departement of Conservation. 2003–2009 she was working as a conservator of muralpaintings in Rome. She has supervised many conservation and technical investigation projects in Estonia, cureated exhibitions made scientific research on topic of conservation and technical art history. Hiiop’s PhD theses (2012) treated the conservation management of contemporary art

Assessment of plastics in the National Trust: a case study at Mr Straw's House

    Get PDF
The National Trust is a charity that cares for over 300 publically accessible historic buildings and their contents across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. There have been few previous studies on preservation of plastics within National Trust collections, which form a significant part of the more modern collections of objects. This paper describes the design of an assessment system which was successfully trialled at Mr Straws House, a National Trust property in Worksop, UK. This system can now be used for future plastic surveys at other National Trust properties. In addition, the survey gave valuable information about the state of the collection, demonstrating that the plastics that are deteriorating are those that are known to be vulnerable, namely cellulose nitrate/acetate, PVC and rubber. Verifying this knowledge of the most vulnerable plastics enables us to recommend to properties across National Trust that these types should be seen as a priority for correct storage and in-depth recording

Training courses on IPM were held at the Grand Egyptian Museum Conservation Center three times from 2010 to 2011 as part of the JICA-GEM-CC Project with the help of the National Research Institute of Cultural Properties, Tokyo. The training coursesconsisted of 4 days’lectures and practices on insects and microbiology. Trainees, around 15 members each time, were selected from the staff of GEM-CC by themselves. They learned examination by sticky traps, identification of insects harmful to museum objects, method of CO2gas fumigation, sampling methods of fungi in air and on the surface of objects, isolation and identification of fungi, and examination of agents having antibacterial effect. During the period between the training courses, staff of GEM-CC examined the facilities of GEM-CC every month with sticky traps for insects and with an air-sampler for fungi. The results were discussed on the first day of the following training course with the instructors in order to improve the condition of GEM-CC facilities for conservation. After the three training courses, the staff of GEM-CC seem to have obtained knowledge and skill of IPM to some extent and are expected to develop them more. The authors also wish to expand the activity of the staff to conservation at the Grand Egyptian Museum which will open in 2015

MAP as a conservation method for contemporary art with foodstuffs : three case studies

    Get PDF
This article examines the use of Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP), a widely applied preservation method in the food packing industry, for preserving contemporary artworks with foodstuffs. Three case studies are presented for which guidelines to preserve those works are proposed, taking into account the temporal, ephemeral character of these artworks on the one hand and their material preservation on the other hand and to explore whether and how they can be presented and preserved for future generations

A select annotated bibliography of references about Adhesives in Textile Conservation, compiled by Karen Thompson. The aim of the Chantry Library Subject Bibliographies is to support the work of Icon members, by providing an up-to-date list of the most relevant source material on a topic in conservation with annotations giving information about the relevance, accuracy and quality of the sources cited, making it easier to evaluate the literature on a given subject. The Bibliographies have been compiled by recognized specialists, who have selected the key works in their field of specialism. This bibliography, the third in our series, provides a compilation of selected references about the use of adhesives in textile conservation. Drawing on specialist knowledge from research and best practice at the Centre for Textile Conservation at the University of Glasgow, the references reflect much of the current thinking and issues in this area of expertise and specialism
