A Multi-hop Mobile Networking Test-bed for Telematics
An onboard vehicle-to-vehicle multi-hop wireless networking system has been developed to test the realworld performance of telematics applications. The system targets emergency and safety messaging, traffic updates, audio/video streaming and commercial announcements. The test-bed includes a Differential GPS receiver, an IEEE 802.11a radio card modified to emulate the DSRC standard, a 1xRTT cellular-data connection, an onboard computer and audio-visual equipment. Vehicles exchange data directly or via intermediate vehicles using a multi-hop routing protocol. The focus of the test-bed is to (a) evaluate the feasibility of high-speed inter-vehicular networking, (b) characterize 5.8GHz signal propagation within a dynamic mobile ad hoc environment, and (c) develop routing protocols for highly mobile networks. The test-bed has been deployed across five vehicles and tested over 400 miles on the road

Individual and Collective Behavior of Small Vibrating Motors Interacting Through a Resonant Plate
We report on experiments of many small motors -- cell phone vibrators --
glued to and interacting through a resonant plate. We find that individual
motors interacting with the plate demonstrate hysteresis in their steady-state
frequency due to interactions with plate resonances. For multiple motors
running simultaneously, the degree of synchronization between motors increases
when the motors' frequencies are near a resonance of the plate, and the
frequency at which the motors synchronize shows a history dependence.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure

Cold atom realizations of Brownian motors
Brownian motors are devices which "rectify" Brownian motion, i.e. they can
generate a current of particles out of unbiased fluctuations. Brownian motors
are important for the understanding of molecular motors, and are also promising
for the realization of new nanolelectronic devices. Among the different systems
that can be used to study Brownian motors, cold atoms in optical lattices are
quite an unusual one: there is no thermal bath and both the potential and the
fluctuations are determined by laser fields. In this article recent
experimental implementations of Brownian motors using cold atoms in optical
lattices are reviewed
A Multi-Motor Architecture for Electric Vehicles
This paper proposes an architecture for EVs with three or more electric motors and highlights when adding more motors does not impact the battery state of charge (SOC). The proposed control algorithm optimizes the use of the motors onboard to keep them running in their most efficient regions. Simulation results along with a comparison with other current motors used in EVs is presented in this paper, and further discussion on the results is presented. With this architecture, the powertrain would see a combined efficiency map that incorporates the best operating points of the motors. Therefore, the proposed architecture will allow the EV to operate with a higher range for a given battery capacity
