Soil Stabilization is used for a variety of activities including temporary wearing curses, working platforms, improving poor subgrade materials,
upgrading marginal materials, dust control, and recycling old roads containing marginal materials. There are a number methods of stabilizing soils
including modifying the gradation, the use of asphalt or cement stabilizers, geofiber stabilization and chemical stabilization. Selection of the method
depends on the soil type, environment and application. This manual provide tools and guidance in the selection of the proper stabilization method and
information on how to apply the method.

A laboratory study on cold-mix, cold-lay emulsion mixtures
This paper describes laboratory experiments and presents
results for the performances of cold-mix, cold-lay
emulsion mixtures. The main objective of the experiments
was to evaluate and improve the properties of the cold
mixtures. The mixture properties evaluated were:
volumetric properties, indirect tensile stiffness modulus
(ITSM), repeated load axial creep and fatigue. These
properties were compared with conventional hot asphalt
mixtures not containing any waste/recycled materials. To
optimise the performances of the mixtures, a target of
ITSM value of 2000 MPa was selected. At full curing
conditions, the stiffness of the cold mixes was found to be
very similar to that of hot mixtures of the same
penetration grade base bitumen (100 pen). Test results
also show that the addition of 1–2% cement significantly
improved the mechanical performance of the mixes and
significantly accelerated their strength gain. The fatigue
behaviour of the cold mixes that incorporated cement was
comparable with that of the hot mixtures
Behaviour of ground cupola furnace slag blended concrete at elevated temperature
Fires adversely affect the performance of concrete when expose to extreme temperatures. However, it is important to study the effects of elevated temperature on the concrete properties. Concrete often contains other cementitious materials such as ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) and this has been successfully used to improve its properties. Hence, little or no study has been carried out on the use of ground cupola furnace slag (GCFS) in concreting. Therefore, this paper investigates the behavior of concrete blended with GCFS at elevated temperatures. A total of 300 samples were prepared with four different GCFS contents. The test specimens were cured for 28-d and 56-d and subjected to elevated temperatures ranging from 200oC to 800oC up to 24 h. The slump, residual compressive and tensile strength tests were carried out on fresh and hardened concrete. The results showed that the compressive strength and splitting tensile strengths of concrete generally increased with increasing % GCFS content but decreased as temperature increases. At 28-d and 56-d, the strengths were observed to be maximum at 10% replacement when the temperature is 200oC compared to other mixes. It can be concluded that the strength drastically decreased at temperature above 200oC. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) was also carried out to determine the effect of the elevated temperature and percentage replacement of cement with GCFS on the 28-d and 56-d compressive strength of concrete. The results showed that temperature and % GCFS content had a statistically significant effect on the concrete performance. Based on Tukey’s honestly significant difference (HSD), the effect of GCFS was found to be statistically non-significant for 4% and 6% GCFS content at 28-d; and 2% and 4% GCFS content at 56-d. The effect of temperature was also found to be statistically non-significant for 600oC and 800oC at 28-d; and 27oC and 600oC; 200oC and 400oC at 56-d

A Targeted Approach to High-Volume Fly Ash Concrete Pavement (Phase I)
Unlike the conventional method of admixing nanomaterials directly in fresh concrete mixture, a more targeted approach was explored. Specifically, nanomaterials were used to improve the interface between coarse aggregate and cement paste, by coating the coarse aggregate with cement paste that contained graphene oxide or nanosilica. Using coated coarse aggregates, the mechanical and transport properties of high-volume fly ash (HVFA) concrete were tested to evaluate the effect of nanomaterial coating on the interface transition zone of concrete. The compressive and splitting strengths of HVFA concrete at 3, 7, 14, and 28 days and the water sorptivity and chloride migration coefficient at 28 days were studied. Results show that nanomaterial-coated coarse aggregate can improve the transport properties of HVFA concrete by reducing permeability. However, no improvement was seen in the compressive and splitting strengths when incorporating coated coarse aggregate, compared with direct mixing of nanomaterials in fresh concrete. Resistance to freezing/thawing cycles and scanning electron microscope/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy of concrete samples were also investigated to obtain a more comprehensive and mechanistic understanding of nanomaterial coating
Prediction of Thermal Behavior of Pervious Concrete Pavements in Winter
Because application of pervious concrete pavement (PCPs) has extended to cold-climate regions of the United States, the safety and mobility of PCP installations during the winter season need to be maintained. Timely application of salt, anti-icing, and deicing agents for ice/snow control is most effective in providing sufficient surface friction when done at a suitable pavement surface temperature. The aim of this project was to determine the thermal properties of PCP during the winter season, and to develop a theoretical model to predict PCP surface temperature. The project included a laboratory and a field component. In the laboratory, thermal conductivity of pervious concrete was determined. A linear relationship was established between thermal conductivity and porosity for pervious concrete specimens. In the field, the pavement temperature in a PCP sidewalk installation at Washington State University was monitored via in-pavement instrumentation. Based on the field data, the Enhanced Integrated Climatic Model (EICM) was developed and validated for the site, using PCP thermal properties and local climatic data. The EICM-predicted PCP surface temperature during the winter season agreed well with the field temperature. Overall, the predicted number of days that the pavement surface fell below 32°F agreed well with the number based on field data for 85% of the days. Therefore, the developed model is useful in identifying those days to apply deicer agents. Finally, a regression model using climatic indices was developed for PCP surface temperature prediction in the absence of a more advanced temperature model
Considerations on the physical and mechanical properties of lime-stabilized rammed earth walls and their evaluation by ultrasonic pulse velocity testing
This study examines the influence of moulding moisture content on the compressive strength, dry density and porosity of a rammed earth wall, using ultrasound as a complementary technique. Non-parametric and multivariate statistical techniques were applied to analyse the behaviour of variables with a sufficiently large population. The statistical analysis demonstrated that excessive or insufficient moulding moisture content directly determines the physical-mechanical properties of such walls. Ultrasound was confirmed as a valid technique for assessing the quality of a wall, since its response, albeit with certain limitations, was consistent with physical-mechanical properties
SEM image analysis in permeable recycled concretes with silica fume. A quantitative comparison of porosity and the ITZ
Recycled aggregates (RA) from construction and demolition can be used in permeable concretes (PC), improving the environment. PCs have a significant porous network, their cement paste and the interaction between the paste and the RA establishing their strength. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the porosity in the interfacial transition zones. The porosity of the cement paste, the aggregate and the interfacial transitional zones (ITZ) of a PC with recycled coarse aggregates (RCA) and silica fume (SF) is measured by means of image analysis–scanning electron microscope (IA)-(SEM) and by mapping the chemical elements with an SEM-EDS (energy dispersive spectrometer) detector microanalysis linked to the SEM and, as a contrast, the mercury intrusion porosimetry technique (MIP). In the IA process, a “mask” was created for the aggregate and another for the paste, which determined the porosity percentage (for the anhydrous material and the products of hydration). The results showed that using SF caused a reduction (32%) in the cement paste porosity in comparison with the PC with RA. The use of RA in the PC led to a significant increase (190%) in the porosity at different thicknesses of ITZ compared with the reference PC. Freeze-thaw durability of recycled concrete from construction and demolition wastes
Road engineering is one of the most accepted applications for concrete including
recycled aggregates from construction and demolition wastes as a partial replacement of the natural
coarse aggregates. Amongst the durability concerns of such application, the deterioration due to
freeze-thaw cycles is one of the most important causes decreasing the life span of concrete in
countries with a continental climate. Moreover, the use of de-icing salts, which is a common
practice to prevent ice formation on roadways and walkways, increases the superficial degradation
of concrete due to frost-salt scaling. Thus, this paper aims to assess the resistance to frost salt with
de-icing salts of two recycled concrete mixtures containing a 50% replacement of the conventional
gravel by recycled aggregates both of mixed and ceramic nature, i.e. containing ceramic percentages
of 34% and 100%, in comparison to a conventional concrete made with siliceous gravel. Therefore,
the surface scaling was evaluated based on EN 1339 (2004) on 28 days cured cylinders, exposed to
7, 14, 21 and 28 freeze-thaw cycles in the presence of sodium chloride solution. Given that no airentraining
admixture was used in any of the mixtures, the scaling of both conventional and recycled
concretes exceeded the 1 kg/m2 limit established by the European standard. Nonetheless, for the
casting surface, the recycled concrete with low ceramic content exhibited a similar behaviour to the
conventional concrete, whereas the performance of the recycled concrete with high ceramic content
was better. However, as expected, trowelled surfaces showed a worse performance and both
recycled concretes had a lower freeze-thaw durability than the conventional mixture. In any case,
the results suggested that the composition of the recycled aggregates could be used as a factor to
limit the differences in performance between recycled and conventional mixtures
