    Sumber informasi ilmiah berbasis open access merupakan sebuahsumber informasi yang memungkinkan pengguna itu untukmengakses hasil-hasil penelitian maupun kegiatan ilmiah secaraterbuka, gratis dan tanpa hambatan apapun. Keberadaan openaccess menambah variasi informasi yang berkualitas seperti buku,e-journal, tesis dan karya ilmiah lainnya sehingga dapatmenunjang proses sharing knowledge. Open access informasi diperpustakaan memiliki banyak peran karena dapat membukapeluang bagi mereka untuk menghasilkan karya-karya baru yangberguna untuk pengembangan Institusional Repository diIndonesia. Peran civitas akademik juga sangat penting karenamereka sebagai penulis utama sebuah karya ilmiah. Perpustakaandapat melakukan promosi mengenai Institusional Repositoryyang berasal dari civitas akademik perguruan tinggi tersebutmelalui open access movement dan juga turut mengembangkansistem publikasi ilmiah dan memastikan dukungan dari kebijakanuniversitas yang menggalakkan kebijakan open access.     Open Access Journals in Agriculture and Allied Sciences: A Study based on Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ)

    This paper attempts to do a quantitative analysis of open access journals in the field of agriculture and allied sciences indexed by the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) which indexes over 17,200 peer-reviewed open access journals covering all branches of knowledge published by 130 countries in 80 languages. The study revealed that out of 17,282 open access journals indexed by the DOAJ (as on 31.12.2021), 458 journals (2.65%) are publishing articles related to agriculture and allied sciences. Brazil and Indonesia are the top countries publishing higher number of OA journals in agriculture and allied sciences with 74 titles each (16.16%) followed United Kingdom with 26 titles (5.68%), Out of 458 journals, 179 journals (39.08%) are published in English language. About 62.28% (285 journals) are published in monolingual followed by bilingual (124 journals; 7.07%), trilingual (44 journals; 9.61%), quadrilingual (3 journals; 0.65%) and each journal in pentalingual and multilingual. Creative Common licensing is followed by 447 (97.60%) journals. While 230 journals (50.22%) permit the authors to hold complete copyright 228 journals (49.78%) restrict the same. Double blind peer review is followed by 243 journals (53.06%) and ‚ÄėBlind peer review‚Äô by 115 journals (25.11%). While 272 journals (59.39%) don‚Äôt collect article processing charges (APC) from the authors, 186 journals (40.61%) collect APC. Most of the journal publishers i.e. 119 (25.98%) take 9-12 weeks for publication and 3 journals take more than 52 weeks for the same. The study revealed that 164 OA journals (35.81%) provide access to below 100 articles and only one journal provide access to more than 5000 articles

    Using metadata record graphs to understand controlled vocabulary and keyword usage for subject representation in the UNT theses and dissertations collection

    An important function of metadata for electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) is supporting the discovery of related documents through linking of data values in the fields of metadata records. While benefits of the ETD format allow for full-text searching, metadata is still an important and necessary component of the global ETD infrastructure because it is often not possible to share the full documents in aggregations such as the Global ETD Search for the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations. The metadata field that has the most potential to assist users in discovery is the subject field used to represent what a resource is about. Over the years there has been much discussion of the value of author-generated keywords versus adding subject terms from controlled vocabularies by information professionals as documents are submitted to the University repository. This research seeks to explore this problem with the help of network analysis method not used for such analyzes before by building and analyzing metadata record graphs for the University of North Texas theses and dissertations.     [Objective] To present different conceptions and particularities about the object and the digital document, considering the technical and institutional aspects where the themes can be observed from Frohmann's perspective, from the perspective of the materiality of the information. [Methodology] For this purpose, a mapping of published articles about the studied topic was carried out. It is concluded, after discussions of the texts obtained with the mapping, that there are researchers who emphasize technicist thinking - the use of technique by technique - as to the materiality of information in a given support object, something that defines it in terms of physicality. On the other hand, there are also researchers who do not align themselves with the traditional thinking of information materiality, since it starts to be conceived as an object of study within the scope of the social paradigm of information, whose conception of materiality permeates questions of symbolic, political and epistemological, therefore involving different intentionalities

    Mapping the German Diamond Open Access Journal Landscape

    In the current scientific and political discourse surrounding the transformation of the scientific publication system, significant attention is focused on Diamond Open Access (OA). This article explores the potential and challenges of Diamond OA journals, using Germany as a case study. Two questions are addressed: first, the current role of such journals in the scientific publication system is determined through bibliometric analysis across various disciplines. Second, an investigation is conducted to assess the sustainability of Diamond OA journals and identify associated structural problems or potential breaking points. This investigation includes an in-depth expert interview study involving 20 editors of Diamond OA journals. The empirical results are presented using a landscape map that considers two dimensions: 'monetized and gift-based completion of tasks' and 'journal team size.' The bibliometric analysis reveals a substantial number of Diamond OA journals in the social sciences and humanities, but limited adoption in other fields. The model proves effective for small to mid-sized journals, but not for larger ones. Additionally, it was found that 23 Diamond OA journals have recently discontinued their operations. The expert interviews demonstrate the usefulness of the two dimensions in understanding key differences. Journals in two of the four quadrants of the map exemplify sustainable conditions, while the other two quadrants raise concerns about long-term stability. These concerns include limited funding leading to a lack of division of labor and an excessive burden on highly committed members. These findings underscore the need for the development of more sustainable funding models to ensure the success of Diamond OA journals.Comment: 29 pages, 8 figure

    Analysis of Persian Wikipedia Articles in the Field of Library and Information Science

    Objective: Wikipedia is a social multilingual encyclopedia that integrates all information about a particular topic on its platform. The present study aims to analyze the thematic content of Persian articles contributed in the field of library and information science (LIS) in Wikipedia and to identify the thematic gaps in this field. Materials and Methods: The data were collected using two different methods: document analysis and observation. In the first and second phases of the study, 591 Persian articles written in the categories of Library and Information Science and other related sub-categories were identified and analyzed. Then, their thematic content and gaps were investigated using a checklist developed based on the JITA Classification System of LIS. The collected data were analyzed using Microsoft Excel. Findings: The results revealed the following thematic content distribution of Persian articles written in the field of Library and Information Science in Wikipedia based on the JITA Classification System: ‚ÄúI. Information treatment for information services‚ÄĚ class with 134 articles (22.69% out of 591 articles), ‚ÄúH. Information sources, supports, channels‚ÄĚ class with 126 articles (21.32%), ‚ÄúL. Information technology and library technology‚ÄĚ class with 84 articles (14.24%), ‚ÄúE. Publishing and legal issues‚ÄĚ class with 58 articles (9.82%), ‚ÄúB. Information use and sociology of information‚ÄĚ class with 57 articles (9.65%), ‚ÄúG. Industry, profession and education‚ÄĚ class with 51 articles (8.64%), ‚ÄúD. Libraries as physical collections‚ÄĚ class with 40 articles (6.78%), ‚ÄúA. Theoretical and general aspects of libraries and information‚ÄĚ class with 16 articles (2.72%), ‚ÄúJ. Technical services in libraries, archives, museum‚ÄĚ class with 10 articles (1.7%), ‚ÄúF. Management‚ÄĚ class with 9 articles (1.52%), ‚ÄúC. Conclusion: Due to the thematic dispersion of Persian Wikipedia articles, Iranian LIS professionals should improve the quantity and quality of Persian articles on Wikipedia, especially on topics with thematic gaps. While reviewing the articles, it was observed that some articles were weak in terms of content and scope. It is suggested that librarians, information specialists, and information professionals help Wikipedia to strengthen and improve its articles, which in turn benefits the millions of users around the world

    Uso das bibliotecas digitais da Biblioteca Central pelos estudantes indígenas da UnB

Para tal fim, possui como objetivo geral identificar e analisar o uso das bibliotecas digitais da BCE pelos estudantes ind√≠genas da UnB, precisamente na realiza√ß√£o das atividades acad√™micas e de pesquisa. Os objetivos espec√≠ficos foram: identificar os perfis acad√™micos dos estudantes ind√≠genas da UnB; levantar as compet√™ncias informacionais dos estudantes ind√≠genas no uso das bibliotecas digitais da BCE/UnB; identificar se esses estudantes conhecem as bibliotecas digitais da BCE/UnB; verificar como eles utilizam as bibliotecas digitais da BCE/UnB em suas atividades acad√™micas e de pesquisa; identificar poss√≠veis dificuldades dos estudantes ind√≠genas no uso das bibliotecas digitais da BCE/UnB. Este estudo √© de natureza te√≥rica, explorat√≥ria e descritiva. Do ponto de vista metodol√≥gico, trata-se de uma abordagem quali-quantitativa, n√£o experimental e de cunho etnogr√°fico. Os dados foram coletados por meio de entrevistas e question√°rios e, em seguida, submetidos √† an√°lise estat√≠stico e an√°lise de conte√ļdo. A popula√ß√£o do estudo foi constitu√≠da por estudantes ind√≠genas matriculados na Universidade de Bras√≠lia, definida a partir da t√©cnica de amostragem n√£o probabil√≠stica por conveni√™ncia. Os resultados mostram que; os estudantes ind√≠genas acessam √†s bibliotecas digitais, por√©m, a frequ√™ncia √© m√≠nima. O estudo evidencia tamb√©m; que a maior parte dos estudantes prefere acessar √†s informa√ß√Ķes por meio de formato impresso, isto porque a maior parcela dos entrevistados manifestou possuir dificuldades para interagir com as plataformas das bibliotecas digitais, sobretudo no in√≠cio dos estudos. Por√©m, os estudantes relataram que as bibliotecas digitais s√£o ferramentas que favorecem o desenvolvimento das pesquisas e dos trabalhos acad√™micos, notadamente pelo conte√ļdo dispon√≠vel gratuito e atualizado. Eles possuem uma percep√ß√£o positiva dessas plataformas, independentemente das dificuldades que para acess√°-las. Al√©m disso, observou-se que, para acessar √†s informa√ß√Ķes, esses estudantes utilizam telefone celular, computador, notebook e tablet. Por fim, √© poss√≠vel dizer que os estudantes ind√≠genas possuem uma limitada cultura tecnol√≥gica, mesmo que tenham se apropriado de diversos tipos de tecnologias. Em rela√ß√£o ao comportamento informacional, embora o estudo mostre que eles est√£o influenciados pela modernidade, quando buscam informa√ß√Ķes para satisfazer suas necessidades de informa√ß√£o acad√™mica e cient√≠fica, as bibliotecas digitais da Biblioteca Central da Universidade de Bras√≠lia n√£o s√£o prioridade, pois preferem acessar o Google.Coordena√ß√£o de Aperfei√ßoamento de Pessoal de N√≠vel Superior (CAPES).The main goal of this research is to study the use of digital libraries of the Biblioteca Central (BCE) by the indigenous students of the University of Brasilia (UnB) in order to identify and analyze the use of the digital libraries of the BCE by the indigenous students of the UnB who carry out academic and research activities. The specific objectives of this research are on the one hand, to identify the academic profiles of the indigenous students at UnB, and, on the other hand, to evaluate their informational skills when using BCE's digital libraries. The purpose is to identify whether indigenous students are familiar with the BCE digital libraries and analyze if they do carry out academic and research activities; identifying their probable difficulties. This study has a theoretical, exploratory and descriptive framework. From the methodological point of view, this is a qualitative and quantitative, non-experimental and ethnographic approach. Data were collected through interviews and questionnaires and then put under content analysis. The population of this study was comprised by indigenous students at UnB, defined by the technique of non-probabilistic sampling for convenience. The results show that indigenous students do access digital libraries but the frequency is minimal, the results also show that most of them prefer to access information through printed format because, as they stated, they have difficulties when interacting with digital library platforms, especially when they just start as undergraduate students. However, students reported that digital libraries are tools that favor the development of research and academic work because the content is freely available and up-todate. They have a positive perception of these platforms, regardless the difficulties they may face when accessing them. Additionally, it was noted that in order to access the information they use their cell phones, computers, notebooks and tablets.
