Creating New Expressions of Worship Gatherings within Existing Churches

It is my claim that multiple expressions of worship gatherings must be created to connect generations to Jesus. Worship services are the face of many churches, but according to recent studies many people are leaving the American church at a rapid rate.1 Many issues surrounding the decline of the American church exist, but my claim is that many young adults feel disconnected from many Sunday morning worship experiences. Many have attempted to fix this problem by creating evangelistic ministry teams, by moving churches from the mega church model to the house church model, and even by removing the mass gathering of members from the church experience altogether. I claim, in a fast-changing culture, churches must constantly create or provide fresh worship experiences, rooted in Biblical truth, to reach each succeeding generation. A one-dimensional church typically reaches one generation or target audience. In an attempt to create a solution, I was given permission to create a new worship experience under the umbrella of Hillvue Heights Church called the Gathering. This paper and project will explore the Gathering\u27s purpose and provide resources for the local community as well as resources for pastors who desire to create new expressions of worship within their existing churches. The project portion of this dissertation is a website providing information about the Gathering and resources for spiritual formation of those who attend. The website provides sermons, resources, and a calendar, etc., for community growth

Child Discipline : A Workshop For Christian Parents

    Get PDF
Purpose of the Project It is the purpose of this project to prepare and field-test for pastoral use a series of six workshop presentations for parents on child training and discipline. Description of the Project The project consists of two papers: A theological position paper and a professional-application paper. In the theological position paper a study was made of selected ways and methods God used to discipline and correct the waywardness of the human family. Biblical principles of child training advocated by leading evangelical scholars and writers are compared with Scripture and the writings of Ellen G. White and theologically evaluated. The professional-application paper describes the development of the workshop on child discipline. It includes actual manuscripts of the workshop lectures. Each lecture is preceded by an outline and a statement of objectives. Reconmendations and observations growing out of the project are also included. :The workshop was field tested in both the Niles, Michigan, and South Bend, Indiana, Seventh-day Adventist Churches. An effort was made to involve the volunteer participants in the active use of the principles being taught through activities and take-home assignments. A pre-test and a post-test evaluation of participants\u27 understanding of disciplinary methods was conducted

Between Heaven and Hell and Heathens

This work of fiction explores the relationship between worshipped and worshipper by dually depicting it as a child/parent relationship and as a relationship between lovers. Written in the tradition of parodies like Don Quixote and re-imaginings of myths like The Childhood of Jesus by J.M. Coetzee, I use humor and a contemporary setting in my book about a child who could be the second coming of Christ, but who cares more about his mother\u27 s approval than he does about God

Linking Genesis to Modern Day Castaway Narratives

    Get PDF
This thesis analyzes two castaway novels, Lord of the Flies and John Dollar, and compares these novels to segments of Genesis, focusing primarily on the story of Adam and Eve. To compare and contrast these three works, I pulled out eleven similar ideas found in each text which formed eleven different chapters. This project evolved into offering an alternative way to interpret these castaway narratives as retellings of the creation story. The characters in John Dollar and Lord of the Flies become Adam and Eve type figures as they try to survive on Edenlike islands. At the same time, this thesis shows how Genesis can be interpreted as the original castaway tale. This thesis also shows that each text contains the common theme of trying to understand humankind’s “natural condition”—our innate human characteristics such as our tendency to “fall.
