This paper is a survey on the emerging theory of truncated Toeplitz operators. We begin with a brief introduction to the subject and then highlight the many recent developments in the field since Sarason's seminal paper in 2007.Comment: 46 page

Equalities and Inequalities for Norms of Block Imaginary Circulant Operator Matrices

Circulant, block circulant-type matrices and operator norms have become effective tools in solving networked systems. In this paper, the block imaginary circulant operator matrices are discussed. By utilizing the special structure of such matrices, several norm equalities and inequalities are presented. The norm τ in consideration is the weakly unitarily invariant norm, which satisfies τA=τ(UAV). The usual operator norm and Schatten p-norm are included. Furthermore, some special cases and examples are given

Quantum phase transitions and quantum fidelity in free fermion graphs

In this paper we analyze the ground state phase diagram of a class of fermionic Hamiltonians by looking at the fidelity of ground states corresponding to slightly different Hamiltonian parameters. The Hamiltonians under investigation can be considered as the variable range generalization of the fermionic Hamiltonian obtained by the Jordan-Wigner transformation of the XY spin-chain in a transverse magnetic field. Under periodic boundary conditions, the matrices of the problem become circulant and the models are exactly solvable. Their free-ends counterparts are instead analyzed numerically. In particular, we focus on the long range model corresponding to a fully connected directed graph, providing asymptotic results in the thermodynamic limit, as well as the finite-size scaling analysis of the second order quantum phase transitions of the system. A strict relation between fidelity and single particle spectrum is demonstrated, and a peculiar gapful transition due to the long range nature of the coupling is found. A comparison between fidelity and another transition marker borrowed from quantum information i.e., single site entanglement, is also considered.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure

Dual finite frames for vector spaces over an arbitrary field with applications

    Get PDF
In the present paper, we study frames for finitedimensional vector spaces over an arbitrary field. We develop a theory of dual frames in order to obtain and study the different representations of the elements of the vector space provided by a frame. We relate the introduced theory with the classical one of dual frames for Hilbert spaces and apply it to study dual frames for three types of vector spaces: for vector spaces over conjugate closed subfields of the complex numbers (in particular, for cyclotomic fields), for metric vector spaces, and for ultrametric normed vector spaces over complete non-archimedean valued fields. Finally, we consider the matrix representation of operators using dual frames and its application to the solution of operators equations in a Petrov-Galerkin scheme.Fil: Morillas, Patricia Mariela. Exact Inverse Matrices of Fermat and Mersenne Circulant Matrix

    Get PDF
The well known circulant matrices are applied to solve networked systems. In this paper, circulant and left circulant matrices with the Fermat and Mersenne numbers are considered. The nonsingularity of these special matrices is discussed. Meanwhile, the exact determinants and inverse matrices of these special matrices are presented

Spectral Properties of Structured Kronecker Products and Their Applications

We study certain spectral properties of some fundamental matrix functions of pairs of symmetric matrices. Our study includes eigenvalue inequalities and various interlacing properties of eigenvalues. We also discuss the role of interlacing in inverse eigenvalue problems for structured matrices. Interlacing is the main ingredient of many fundamental eigenvalue inequalities. This thesis also recounts a historical development of the eigenvalue inequalities relating the sum of two matrices to its summands with some recent findings motivated by problems arising in compressed sensing. One of the fundamental matrix functions on pairs of matrices is the Kronecker product. It arises in many fields such as image processing, signal processing, quantum information theory, differential equations and semidefinite optimization. Kronecker products enjoy useful algebraic properties that have proven to be useful in applications. The less-studied symmetric Kronecker product and skew-symmetric Kronecker product (a contribution of this thesis) arise in semidefinite optimization. This thesis focuses on certain interlacing and eigenvalue inequalities of structured Kronecker products in the context of semidefinite optimization. A popular method used in semidefinite optimization is the primal-dual interior point path following algorithms. In this framework, the Jordan-Kronecker products arise naturally in the computation of Newton search direction. This product also appears in many linear matrix equations, especially in control theory. We study the properties of this product and present some nice algebraic relations. Then, we revisit the symmetric Kronecker product and present its counterpart the skew-symmetric Kronecker product with its basic properties. We settle the conjectures posed by Tunçel and Wolkowicz, in 2003, on interlacing properties of eigenvalues of the Jordan-Kronecker product and inequalities relating the extreme eigenvalues of the Jordan-Kronecker product. We disprove these conjectures in general, but we also identify large classes of matrices for which the interlacing properties hold. Furthermore, we present techniques to generate classes of matrices for which these conjectures fail. In addition, we present a generalization of the Jordan-Kronecker product (by replacing the transpose operator with an arbitrary symmetric involution operator). We study its spectral structure in terms of eigenvalues and eigenvectors and show that the generalization enjoys similar properties of the Jordan-Kronecker product. Lastly, we propose a related structure, namely Lie-Kronecker products and characterize their eigenvectors
