Rhetoric and Food: The Rise of the Food Truck Movement

    Get PDF
This analysis is an attempt to study the rise of a new mobile food medium the food truck. I examine the movement of rhetorical actors, the situation, the audiences, and discourses created and sustained through rhetorical practices. These include looking into contemporary controversies, the history and storytelling that helps to convey identity, a new aesthetic experience created by the medium, and specifically their sophistic character and rhetoric helping them speak on issues of social justice and change. To understand these texts, I examine each of them in light of their rhetorical situation and the convergence of a multitude of kairotic factors. I use the situation as a hinge to examine how the movement, through its rhetorical practices and characters have changed the foodscape and the foodways of the communities in which they are active

Gourmet Food Trucks: An Ethnographic Examination Of Orlando\u27s Food Truck Scene

    Get PDF
Gourmet food trucks have emerged as increasingly popular dining alternatives for consumers in today’s urban landscape. Existing literature, as well as my own ethnographic research within Orlando, Florida’s mobile food vending scene, reveals that food truck owner/operators utilize various strategies to establish a viable niche for themselves in this diversified and burgeoning market. Among other things, these strategies include online social networking, creating and maintaining a recognizable brand identity, collaborating with local retailers and bar owners, and incorporating organic and locally produced ingredients in their dishes whenever possible. As in other parts of the country, there appears to be a growing concern in greater Orlando about local diets and the profound and subtle messages it conveys about contemporary eating habits. I contend that dining at gourmet food trucks represents a legitimate declaration of consumer identity about individual beliefs and values. In my thesis, I examine how Orlando’s gourmet food trucks offer consumers a greater selection of food options and allow locals to participate in a viable social network and community

An Insider\u27s Guide to Notre Dame Law School

From the Introduction On behalf of the Notre Dame Law School student body, we are thrilled to be among the first to welcome you to the NDLS Community! We know that this is an exciting time for you and—if you are anything like we were just a couple of years ago—you probably have plenty of questions about law school and Notre Dame, whether it’s about academics, professors, student life, or just where to get a good dinner. That’s why we’ve prepared the Guide. This is called an Insider’s Guide because it has been written by students. Over the past year, we’ve updated and revised old sections, compiled and created new ones, and edited and reedited the whole book in hopes of making your transition to Notre Dame easier. This isn’t a comprehensive guide to everything you need to know to get through law school or thrive in South Bend, but it is a great place to start. Whether you’re trying to figure out where to live next year, the best way to get to and around town, what law students do on the weekend, or which daycare is best for your kids, the Guide is a terrific resource. Please note that some information may have changed since the date of publication, so be sure to confirm pertinent information. We all treasure our experiences here at NDLS. The professors, the students, and the staff of the Law School are unique — their warmth, friendship, and true support have made studying law at Notre Dame a pleasure. We hope that our enthusiasm will be apparent throughout the Guide. We have appreciated reflecting on our experiences here and enjoyed putting the Guide together for you. Although we know that you will receive a variety of additional information from the Law School and the University, we hope that this look at NDLS from the perspective of your soon-to-be colleagues will be valuable as you prepare to start here in August

From cotton mill to co-op: the rise of a local food culture in Carrboro, North Carolina

    Get PDF
Once a bustling mill town, Carrboro, North Carolina, is today a haven for local food. Adjacent to a major research university and mile after mile of rolling farmland, Carrboro is a place where, over the last thirty years, a group of citizens armed with progressive values has created a thriving market community for locally produced food. Area farmers' markets, cooperative groceries, home and community gardens, urban chickens, and locally-focused restaurants play a vital role in the community as a whole--both to its identity and its social, political, and economic activities. This project illuminates some of the complex ties that developed between urban and rural, liberal and conservative, rich and poor (and middle class), young and old, cynical and idealistic, modern and traditional to facilitate the local food segment of Carrboro's broader economy. It also investigates local definitions of place, group, taste, and tradition

Mobile truck entrepreneurship: motivations and strategies of non-food mobile retail truck entrepreneurs in the United States

    Get PDF
This dissertation set out to explore the emerging phenomenon of modern mobile retail trucks opening for business across the United States starting in the early 2010s. Thirty-one participants were interviewed, and the data collected was used to glean a further understanding of who mobile retailers are and the key motivations drawing these individuals to alternative retail spaces on wheels. This study was conducted using qualitative methods and thirty-one participants participated in in-depth interviews. A grounded theory approach was used to inform data interpretation and allowed the themes to emerge directly from the data. The data sorted participants into four cohorts, just out of school (10), career shift (9), escapist (8), and retired hobbiest (4). Four primary motivations emerged among participants, need for flexibility, desire for autonomy, creativity, and social interaction. All of these motivations were representative across the four cohorts; however, each cohort emphasized the motivations in different combinations. All the participants had access to high-speed internet and relied on smartphones for many daily business activities. This study can offer contributions to both academia and the retail industry giving insight into this emerging retail venue. Study limitations include the short duration of the study and the small number of participants, which does not allow for the data to be generalized across all mobile retailers. This study offers a preliminary exploratory view of the phenomenon of modern mobile retail emerging across the United States.Includes bibliographical references
