A Combined Clinical and Langmuir Film Study of Natural Tear Films

    Get PDF
The Langmuir technique has been applied to the study of natural tears and the results obtained from surface pressure-area isotherms have been correlated with those of clinical tests (the Schirmer and the TFBUT tests). The population studied only included people aged over 45. Natural tears were collected from Schirmer strips, which were placed in contact with the water subphase of a Langmuir trough for recording the surface pressure-area isotherms. These isotherms have been classified as good or weak according to the characteristics obtained. From the isotherms, characteristic values such as plimit, CS-1max and pmax were also obtained. The analysis from the Chi-squared test indicates dependence between the Schirmer test and the type of isotherms (P0.05 indicates that the independence cannot be discarded with the significance criteria imposed. Working with the same criteria of significance, we obtain moderate or good Pearson correlation coefficients with statistical significance (P0.05) between the values of the TFBUT test and the plimit, CS-1max and pmax values.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

CHICAGO CENTER FOR FILM STUDY: ORIGIN AND HISTORY One day in August, I was sitting in a restaurant during the Montreal World Film Festival when Jim Wall, the long-time editor, now retired, of the Christian Century, asked me about the origin and history of the Chicago Center for Film Study. And would I put down my recollections of how it all began. "Ask me an easier question" - was my immediate response. After all, the story of the Center for Film Study (CFS) goes back forty years or more. To unravel all the salient facts and many colourful details would require access to the archives of the Adult Education Centers (AEC) in Chicago, the Catholic umbrella organization that nourished the growth of the CFS. And I am not sure those archives even exist. Still, this is the place to start. Back in the August of 1962, three years after my..

...Subversive Pleasures implicitly critiques the dominant parochialism of contemporary film study with the bracing electicism of its method. Both for its basic enterprise of installing Bakhtin as a touchstone fro film scholars and for its rangy, intellectually restless methodological alternative to the constricting specializing of current film theory, Stam\u27s book is among the most important recent contributions to film study

The authors propose to look at the cinema in the education process in terms of its potential use as a tool of formation of creative cross-cultural competence. Nowadays cinema is not just a synthetic art, it is deeply integrated into the basic structure of modern culture, and forms means capable of becoming an effective source of educational innovations. The article proposes the concept of film-study as a reference for the complex of methodical use of cinema in education. Analysis of different cases of inclusion of cinema in practical lessons allowed the authors to substantiate the connection of film-study method with the formation of students‚Äô creative cross-cultural skills. As stated in the article, techniques of film-study method used by the authors contribute to the development of students‚Äô cross-cultural competence relevant in a multicultural context of their professional and daily activities

Literature and Film: Preparing Students for a Media-centric Future

    Get PDF
This project addresses the issue of preparing 21st century students to be critical thinkers and media-literate individuals in the consistently evolving world. This project first examines the changing nature of our media-centered society and current uses of film in the English Language Arts classroom as an effective instructional tool. Afterwards, a curriculum for an elective class that integrates film study alongside literature analysis is then presented as a resource for teachers. This class specifically uses young-adult films for film study as a way to enhance instruction and develop the skills needed to effectively read, analyze, and discuss literature
