    Three inconsistencies in Hawthorne's unfinished romance : Septimius Felton

    When Nathaniel Hawthorne died in I864, his family discovered four unfinished romances among his manuscripts. One of these fragments, Septimius Felton, attracts interest because it is the length of a novel and has a conclusion. The question immediately arises as to why Hawthorne abandoned a romance as near completion as Septimius Felton. Perhaps his advanced age, poor health, and disappointment over the Civil War are secondary reasons for the romance's failure. I believe, however, a better explanation is apparent in the text itself. Since Septimius Felton contains inconsistencies in the development of the theme, in the presentation of the main character, and in the selection of a setting which corresponds to Hawthorne's literary theory and theme, the romance's failure may result from these factors

    The development of simulated learning environments involving coroner’s court attendance in mental health nursing education

    Simulated learning environments (SLEs) provide students with the opportunity to experience complex practice elements with minimal professional risks. This article explores the development of an SLE in undergraduate mental health nursing education. The SLE focuses on events surrounding a client death and follows attendance at a coroner’s court. Student learning outcomes are focused on evaluating essential components of nursing care including communication, record-keeping, risk-taking and ethical decision-making. The SLE, which is now in its fourth iteration, allows educators to review and adapt the teaching practices to achieve the curriculum learning outcomes and encapsulate the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s Code. This article proposes future possibilities for the use of complex simulation dramas to enhance nursing student preparedness for registration

    Implementing LGBTQ+ Curriculum in Early Education Classrooms

    Many elementary schools have LGBTQ+ content missing from the curriculum, with gender identity and expression and diverse family structures notably absent. The issue that arises is children from LGBTQ+ families, or who may be LGBTQ+ themselves, do not feel represented in the curriculum. If children are provided with the knowledge of what it means to be LGBTQ+, then they are more likely to have a healthy relationship with themselves and their peers who may be included in that community. In order to address this issue, I created a three-day lesson for Kindergarten through first graders at San Lorenzo Valley Elementary School in Felton, California

    The cooked meat-derived mammary carcinogen 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP) elicits estrogenic-like microRNA responses in breast cancer cells.

    The cooking of meat results in the generation of heterocyclic amines (HCA), the most abundant of which is 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP). Data from epidemiological, mechanistic, and animal studies indicate that PhIP could be causally linked to breast cancer incidence. Besides the established DNA damaging and mutagenic activities of PhIP, the chemical is reported to have oestrogenic activity that could contribute to its tissue specific carcinogenicity. In this study we investigated the effect of treatment with PhIP and 17-β-estradiol (E2) on global microRNA (miRNA) expression of the oestrogen responsive MCF-7 human breast adenocarcinoma cell line. PhIP and E2 caused widespread and largely over-lapping effects on miRNA expression, with many of the commonly affected miRNA reported to be regulated by oestrogen and have been implicated in the initiation and progression of breast cancer. The regulatory activity of the miRNAs we show here to be responsive to PhIP treatment, are also predicted to mediate cellular phenotypes that are associated with PhIP exposure. Consequently, this study offers further support to the ability of PhIP to induce widespread effects via activation of oestrogen receptor alpha (ERα). Moreover, this study indicates that deregulation of miRNA by PhIP could potentially be an important non-DNA-damaging carcinogenic mechanism in breast cancer. © 2014

    A Review of Smoking among Rural African Americans: Recommendations for Research and Cessation Interventions

    Objective: The purpose of this review is to synthesize the available literature on smoking among rural African Americans. Methods: Using search terms “rural” “African American” “Black” and “smoking” 19 relevant articles were identified in the Medline data base. Findings gleaned from the 19 articles are presented in four categories: a) smoking prevalence, b) smoking behavior and patterns, c) smoking cessation interventions and quitting, and d) smoking-related outcomes. Results: There may be gender differences, a pattern of late onset of smoking, and a preference for mentholated brands among rural African American smokers. There is no evidence that rural African Americans are less likely to quit than other populations, though there may be disparities in receiving appropriate treatment services or advice to quit. Conclusion: More research regarding the socio-cultural and systemic factors that influence the trajectory of smoking initiation, maintenance and cessation among rural African Americans is needed

    Aim: To explore the current literature on service user participation in mental health nursing care and the effectiveness of participation practices. Background: Service user involvement in mental health nursing is a requirement of current practice including research and education. A review of the literature was undertaken as part of a research study on involvement practices in mental health nursing. Method: Original research documents were explored that related to participation in mental health nursing practice. The review included mental health nursing research, education and practice in order to capture the extensive areas of practice. Findings: There are various levels of participation occurring within mental health nursing. The review identified that there is a need for training and knowledge development in order to become familiar with the different levels and develop participation in practice. Conclusion: Information and training in mental health nursing would develop knowledge of participation practices and empower service users to have more control
