    {Excerpt} In a world of continuous flux, where markets mature faster and everyone is affected by information overload, organizations regard innovation, including management innovation, as the prime driver of sustainable competitive advantage. To unlock opportunities, some of them use mindsets and protocols from the field of design to make out unarticulated wants and deliberately imagine, envision, and spawn futures. Design is more important when function is taken for granted and no longer helps stakeholders differentiate. In the last five years, design thinking has emerged as the quickest organizational path to innovation and high-performance, changing the way creativity and commerce interact. In the past, design was a downstream step in the product development process, aiming to enhance the appeal of an existing product. Today, however, organizations ask designers to imagine solutions that meet explicit or latent needs and to build upstream entire systems that optimize customer experience and satisfaction. Therefore, although the term design is commonly understood to describe an object (or end result), it is in its latest and most effective form a process, an action, and a verb, not a noun: essentially, it is a protocol to see, shape, and build. Lately, design approaches are also being applied to infuse insight into the heart of campaigns and address social and other concerns

    Designing a design thinking approach to HRD

    This article considers the value of design thinking as applied to a HRD context, Specifically, it demonstrates how design thinking can be employed through a case study drawn from the GETM3 programme. It reports on the design, development, and delivery of a design thinking workshop which was created to draw out and develop ideas from students and recent graduates about the fundamental training and skills requirements of future employment. While design thinking has been widely deployed in innovation and entrepreneurship, its application to HRD is still very much embryonic. Our overview illustrates how the key characteristics of the design thinking process resonate with those required from HRD (e.g. focus on end user, problem solving, feedback, and innovation). Our contribution stems from illuminating a replicable application of design system thinking including both the process and the outcomes of this application. We conclude that design thinking is likely to serve as a critical mind-set, tool, and strategy to facilitate HRD practitioners and advance HRD practice

    Developing digital literacy in construction management education: a design thinking led approach

    Alongside the digital innovations in AEC (Architectural, Engineering and Construction) practice, are calls for a new type of digital literacy, including a new information-based literacy informed by creativity, critical analysis and the theoretical and practical knowledge of the construction profession. This paper explores the role of design thinking and the promotion of abductive problem situations when developing digital literacies in construction education. The impacts of advanced digital modelling technologies on construction management practices and education are investigated before an examination of design thinking, the role of abductive reasoning and the rise of normative models of design thinking workflows. The paper then explores the role that design thinking can play in the development of new digital literacies in contemporary construction studies. A three-part framework for the implementation of a design thinking approach to construction is presented. The paper closes with a discussion of the importance of models of design thinking for learning and knowledge production, emphasising how construction management education can benefit from them

    Design and design thinking have been identified as making valuable contributions to business and management and the numbers of higher education programs that teach design thinking to business students, managers and executives are growing. However multiple definitions of design thinking and the range of perspectives have created some confusion about potential pathways. This paper examines notions of design and design thinking and uses these definitions to identify themes in higher educational programs. We present the findings from an initial exploratory investigation of design and design thinking in higher education business programs and define four distinct educational approaches around human centred innovation, integrative thinking, design management and design as strategy.     Design thinking and innovation: synthesising concepts of knowledge co-creation in spaces of professional development

    This paper explores how design thinking connects to concepts of knowledge creation and innovation. A case study of a knowledge sharing network in the social services sector is used to illustrate how design thinking supports Ba, the spaces for knowledge creation. Further exploration of the four enabling conditions for Ba resulted in delineation of two distinct types: relational and structural. Relational enablers support three groups of enabling conditions: interaction, shared values and communication. It is proposed that design thinking aligns well with relational enabling conditions for Ba to create the ideal spaces for knowledge creation. The group of structural enablers can assist or obstruct change and relate to the culture and management approaches of an organization, which may or may not be assisted by design thinking. However, to ensure that design thinking is not undermined, and innovation is achieved, the presence of an appropriate structural enabler is critical for success

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membagun Inovasi Model Bisnis berbasis Kanvas Model Bisnis dengan implementasi Design Thinking pada Perusahaan percetakan di Surabaya. Design Thinking memiliki empat tahapan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini, yaitu empathize, define ideate, dan prototyping. Inovasi Model Bisnis menggunakan Kanvas Model Bisnis dengan Sembilan elemen yang ada di dalamnya, yaitu customer segments, value propositions, channels, customer relationships, revenue streams, key resources, key activities, key partnerships, dan cost structure. Pengumpulan data pada penelitian ini menggunakan teknik wawancara semi terstruktur dan dokumentasi. Metode penelitian adalah analisa deskriptif kualitatif dengan ditunjang oleh pendekatan Design Thinking. Dari hasil analisa Design Thinking, informan pengguna menginginkan produk kertas yang tebal, motif dan gambar yang beranekaragam dan update, gambar kotak dapat digambar kartun agar dapat menarik minat anak-anak, warna yang cerah, lipatan kotak yang pas dan ukuran yang beragam. Design Thinking dapat membangun Inovasi Model Bisnis dengan memberikan tambahan nilai pada elemen value propositions yaitu: newnessž customization, performance, problem solving, getting the job done dan design. Pada elemen customer relationship, Perusahaan dapat menambahkan co-creation. Sedangkan pada elemen key activites, Perusahaan dapat menambahkan aktivitas problem solving. Peneliti juga menjabarkan Inovasi Model Bisnis dengan melakukan perbaikan elemen-elemen Kanvas Model Bisnis yang peneliti rasa butuh diperbaik
