Efficient Data Collection in Multimedia Vehicular Sensing Platforms
Vehicles provide an ideal platform for urban sensing applications, as they
can be equipped with all kinds of sensing devices that can continuously monitor
the environment around the travelling vehicle. In this work we are particularly
concerned with the use of vehicles as building blocks of a multimedia mobile
sensor system able to capture camera snapshots of the streets to support
traffic monitoring and urban surveillance tasks. However, cameras are high
data-rate sensors while wireless infrastructures used for vehicular
communications may face performance constraints. Thus, data redundancy
mitigation is of paramount importance in such systems. To address this issue in
this paper we exploit sub-modular optimisation techniques to design efficient
and robust data collection schemes for multimedia vehicular sensor networks. We
also explore an alternative approach for data collection that operates on
longer time scales and relies only on localised decisions rather than
centralised computations. We use network simulations with realistic vehicular
mobility patterns to verify the performance gains of our proposed schemes
compared to a baseline solution that ignores data redundancy. Simulation
results show that our data collection techniques can ensure a more accurate
coverage of the road network while significantly reducing the amount of
transferred data

Habitual Disclosure: Routine, Affordance and the Ethics of Young Peoples Social Media Data Surveillance
Drawing on findings from qualitative interviews and photo elicitation, this paper explores young people’s experiences of breaches of trust with social media platforms and how comfort is re-established despite continual violations. It provides rich qualitative accounts of users habitual relations with social media platforms. In particular, we seek to trace the process by which online affordances create conditions in which ‘sharing’ is regarded as not only routine and benign but pleasurable. Rather it is the withholding of data that is abnormalised. This process has significant implications for the ethics of data collection by problematising a focus on ‘consent’ to data collection by social media platforms. Active engagement with social media, we argue, is premised on a tentative, temporary, shaky trust that is repeatedly ruptured and repaired. We seek to understand the process by which violations of privacy and trust in social media platforms are remediated by their users and rendered ordinary again through everyday habits. We argue that the processes by which users become comfortable with social media platforms, through these routines, calls for an urgent reimagining of data privacy beyond the limited terms of consent

Mobile Privacy and Business-to-Platform Dependencies: An Analysis of SEC Disclosures
This Article systematically examines the dependence of mobile apps on mobile platforms for the collection and use of personal information through an analysis of Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filings of mobile app companies. The Article uses these disclosures to find systematic evidence of how app business models are shaped by the governance of user data by mobile platforms, in order to reflect on the role of platforms in privacy regulation more generally. The analysis of SEC filings documented in the Article produces new and unique insights into the data practices and data-related aspects of the business models of popular mobile apps and shows the value of SEC filings for privacy law and policy research more generally. The discussion of SEC filings and privacy builds on regulatory developments in SEC disclosures and cybersecurity of the last decade. The Article also connects to recent regulatory developments in the U.S. and Europe, including the General Data Protection Regulation, the proposals for a new ePrivacy Regulation and a Regulation of fairness in business-to-platform relations
Applications of satellite data relay to problems of field seismology
A seismic signal processor was developed and tested for use with the NOAA-GOES satellite data collection system. Performance tests on recorded, as well as real time, short period signals indicate that the event recognition technique used is nearly perfect in its rejection of cultural signals and that data can be acquired in many swarm situations with the use of solid state buffer memories. Detailed circuit diagrams are provided. The design of a complete field data collection platform is discussed and the employment of data collection platforms in seismic network is reviewed
