Liar, Liar: Micro-expression Application to Detect Deception
This study focused on nonverbal mirco-expressions using the deception detection method to shed light on the effectiveness of such a tool for use in detecting liars. Five examples of videos depicting instances in which individuals who were later proven to be lying were analyzed in order to assess the reliability of such a tool in an area of interest to both communication and psychology. This study suggested that the theory provides a reliable tool for assessing the use of deception by a variety of people in different situations.
The paper upon which this poster was based was written for the Senior Seminar course in Communication Arts
Misunderstood: The Matthew Shepherd Hate Crime and its Intercultural Implications
The increasing vocalization by both supporters and opponents of homosexual rights has launched the topic into the spotlight, reenergizing a vibrant discussion that personally affects millions of Americans and which will determine the direction in which U.S. national policy will develop. This essay serves as a continuation of this discussion, using the Matthew Shepherd Hate crime, which occurred in October of 1998, as a focal point around which a detailed analysis of homophobia and masculinity in American culture will emerge
News Sharing in Social Media: A Review of Current Research on News Sharing Users, Content, and Networks
This article provides a review of scientific, peer-reviewed articles that examine the relationship between news sharing and social media in the period from 2004 to 2014. A total of 461 articles were obtained following a literature search in two databases (Communication & Mass Media Complete [CMMC] and ACM), out of which 109 were deemed relevant based on the studyβs inclusion criteria. In order to identify general tendencies and to uncover nuanced findings, news sharing research was analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. Three central areas of researchβnews sharing users, content, and networksβwere identified and systematically reviewed. In the central concluding section, the results of the review are used to provide a critical diagnosis of current research and suggestions on how to move forward in news sharing research

Iβm First: A Phenomenological Analysis of the University of North Carolinaβs βCarolina Firstsβ Interviews
This study analyzes interview videos and transcripts produced by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The first-generation interviews, known as βCarolina Firsts,β include current students, staff, and faculty. The phenomenological method was used to identify common themes in the videos and transcripts of six interviewees. Eight essential themes were revealed: the dream comes true, beating the odds, facing the unknown, a challenging first semester, reaching for the degree, it gets easier, the issue of pride, and Carolina keeps its promise. The eight themes identified provide new insights into similar communication experiences among Carolina Firsts interviewees. The study offers suggestions for future research in order to continue gaining new insights into first-generation undergraduate experiences
Medium as King: Social Media & the Political Campaign
There is a growing need for a greater understanding of the intersection between great content, effective targeting and proper media usage in mediated communication and especially in American politics. As more campaigns move their efforts online in an attempt to reach a rapidly growing digital constituency, more content will continue to be less visible. The major quest for this study will be to challenge the long-standing idea that βcontent is kingβ which Bill Gates termed at the inception of the internet. A theoretical background of Marshall McLuhan and Kathleen Hall Jamieson will not only allow us to answer this question, but then will also allow for future researchers to build upon these concepts. This study will aim to demonstrate how the Ted Cruz presidential campaign of 2016, prior to his departure from the race, was an excellent example of the sweet spot in content creation, voter targeting and medium implementation
