EU-China collaboration in design: research in Web-enabled collaborative design supported by the Asia-Link and Asia IT&C projects
The research of Web-enabled collaboration in total design supported by the European Union's Asia Link project [1] and Asia IT&C project is reported in this paper. The two projects both aim at enhancing research collaboration between the EU and China. The Virtual Research Institute (VRI) is described first, which is the platform for the collaboration for the Asia Link project and is established by utilizing the advanced Web techniques; and then, the framework for the collaboration and the Web techniques involved in the research are presented which represent the major research of the Asia IT&C project. The effective collaboration between the project partners and the impacts of the project outcome on the partnership are also discussed
A comparison of processing techniques for producing prototype injection moulding inserts.
This project involves the investigation of processing techniques for producing low-cost moulding inserts used in the particulate injection moulding (PIM) process. Prototype moulds were made from both additive and subtractive processes as well as a combination of the two. The general motivation for this was to reduce the entry cost of users when considering PIM.
PIM cavity inserts were first made by conventional machining from a polymer block using the pocket NC desktop mill. PIM cavity inserts were also made by fused filament deposition modelling using the Tiertime UP plus 3D printer.
The injection moulding trials manifested in surface finish and part removal defects. The feedstock was a titanium metal blend which is brittle in comparison to commodity polymers. That in combination with the mesoscale features, small cross-sections and complex geometries were considered the main problems. For both processing methods, fixes were identified and made to test the theory. These consisted of a blended approach that saw a combination of both the additive and subtractive processes being used.

Data-driven through-life costing to support product lifecycle management solutions in innovative product development
Innovative product usually refers to product that comprises of creativity and new ideas. In the development of such a new product, there is often a lack of historical knowledge and data available to be used to perform cost estimation accurately. This is due to the fact that traditional cost estimation methods are used to predict costs only after a product model has been built, and not at an early design stage when there is little data and information available.
In light of this, original equipment manufacturers are also facing critical challenges of becoming globally competitive and increasing demands from customer for continuous innovation. To alleviate these situations this research has identified a new approach to cost modelling with the inclusion of product lifecycle management solutions to address innovative product development.The aim of this paper, therefore, is to discuss methods of developing an extended-enterprise data-driven through-life cost estimating method for innovative product development
Characterisation of collaborative decision making processes
This paper deals with the collaborative decision making induced or facilitated by Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and their impact on decisional systems. After presenting the problematic, we analyse the collaborative decision making and define the concepts related to the conditions and forms of collaborative work. Then, we explain the mechanisms of collaborative decision making with the specifications and general conditions of collaboration using the modelling formalism of the GRAI method. Each specification associated to the reorganisation of the decisional system caused by the collaboration is set to the notion of decision-making centre. Finally, we apply this approach to the e-maintenance field, strongly penetrated by the ICTs, where collaborations are usual. We show that the identified specifications allow improving the definition and the management of collaboration in e-maintenance
Incremental simulation modelling for Internet collaborative design
In order to support Web-based collaborative design in terms of transferring or updating models dynamically and efficiently, new incremental modelling and local updating strategies have been developed for simulation modelling application since
simulation is more focused on visualisation effects than on geometry details. Based on an assembly connection concept, a drag-and-drop assembly method has also been proposed in simulation assembly. An assembly connection is defined as a group of assembly constraints and it makes assembly easier. A case study example is given to show the content of the proposed research
Reducing risk in pre-production investigations through undergraduate engineering projects.
This poster is the culmination of final year Bachelor of Engineering Technology (B.Eng.Tech) student projects
in 2017 and 2018. The B.Eng.Tech is a level seven qualification that aligns with the Sydney accord for a three-year engineering degree and hence is internationally benchmarked. The enabling mechanism of these projects is the industry connectivity that creates real-world projects and highlights the benefits of the investigation of process at the technologist level.
The methodologies we use are basic and transparent, with enough depth of technical knowledge to ensure the industry partners gain from the collaboration process. The process we use minimizes the disconnect between the student and the industry supervisor while maintaining the academic freedom of the student and the commercial sensitivities of the supervisor.
The general motivation for this approach is the reduction of the entry cost of the industry to enable consideration of new technologies and thereby reducing risk to core business and shareholder profits.

Abandoned project restoration model (APRM) for residential construction projects
Incompletion of construction projects is a common phenomenon in Malaysia. Project abandonment has given an adverse consequences to the economy, society and environment. In the best interest of the end users and other parties involved in the contract, the best resolution for this abandoned projects is to successfully revive them, which has itsâ stages and barriers along the way as well. The main aim of this research is to develop an effective model as a guide towards project restoration which could be used to mitigate the issue of abandoned residential construction projects in Malaysia. Identifying the factors contributing towards the restoration of the abandoned projects are important to have a successful completed project. This research was conducted in the purpose of identifying those significant factors in order to obtain the restoration process for abandoned projects where lastly the Abandoned Project Restoration Model (APRM) was developed. The research focuses on residential construction projects. This research comprises of both quantitative and qualitative approaches and process, where a pilot survey and full survey, and as well as interview analysis were conducted. Factor model was developed using AMOS and lastly the developed model was validated and tested by related officials. The outcome of this research showed that the most significant factor for abandoned project restoration is Management Aspects. A complete restoration process based on the significant factors identified were also obtained. This model is seen as useful in contributing and as well as assisting the restoration of the abandoned projects in Malaysia and could be used as a guideline for that purpose
The design co-ordination framework : key elements for effective product development
This paper proposes a Design Co-ordination Framework (DCF) i.e. a concept for an ideal DC system with the abilities to support co-ordination of various complex aspects of product development. A set of frames, modelling key elements of co-ordination, which reflect the states of design, plans, organisation, allocations, tasks etc. during the design process, has been identified. Each frame is explained and the co-ordination, i.e. the management of the links between these frames, is presented, based upon characteristic DC situations in industry. It is concluded that while the DCF provides a basis for our research efforts into enhancing the product development process there is still considerable work and development required before it can adequately reflect and support Design Co-ordination

Geographic proximity and firm-university innovation linkages: evidence from Great Britain
We investigate evidence for spatially mediated knowledge transfer from university research. We examine whether firms locate their R&D labs near universities, and whether those that do are more likely to co-operate with, or source knowledge from universities. We find that pharmaceutical firms locate R&D near to frontier chemistry research departments, consistent with accessing localised knowledge spillovers, but also linked to the presence of science parks. In industries such as chemicals and vehicles there is
less evidence of immediate co-location, but those innovative firms that do locate near to relevant research departments are more likely to engage with universities
