Language, literacy, and funds of knowledge: Somali refugee women in Clarkston, Georgia

The purpose of this study is to investigate how Somali refugee women experience language and literacy in their community of Clarkston, Georgia, and to identify their funds of knowledge (Gonzales, Moll, & Amanti, 2005), or unseen practices. The aim of this investigation is to strengthen and challenge their current modes of language socialization and to combat negative discourses that represent them as ‘vulnerable victims and cunning crooks’ (Horst, 2006). Clarkston, Georgia was chosen by private resettlement agencies as a refugee resettlement site in the early 1990s. In Clarkston, although there are several refugee serving agencies that focus on refugee education and integration, many Somali refugee women are still facing obstacles during the process of language socialization. In order to investigate the language socialization of Somali refugee women, a holistic case study was conducted. Participants included five Somali refugee women who were affiliated with one specific community of practice, a Somali-ethnic based community organization for refugees. Data collection involved my participant observation and field notes, interviews with the participants, and photographic documentation of the linguistic landscape (Landry & Bourhis, 1997) in Clarkston. Findings reveal the diverse language and literacy practices and language socialization pathways among participants, and shed light on some of the barriers to language socialization, including gender-based ideologies and textually-mediated social interactions, as well as some of the successful strategies they have used. In addition, the case of one exceptional Somali refugee woman, Mama Rita, presents funds of knowledge that may help enhance the language socialization of Somali refugee women and help to understand citizenship as practice rather than status

Home Court Advantage and Quality of Team

Home court advantage was examined using archival data taken from the onset of NCAA Division I basketball record keeping. The effect of team quality on home court advantage was analyzed by examining games where number one ranked teams faced number two ranked teams. The purpose of only examining games between number one and number two ranked teams is an attempt to equalize team quality (team quality in this study is defined by national rank) to better examine home court advantage. My hypothesis is that if team quality is evenly matched then a home court advantage will not play a role in determining a victor. The results of my study lead me to support my hypothesis through examination of a chi square test. Even though my hypothesis is a null hypothesis there are still possible uses for this study. It is the first experiment I have found that examines team quality on a larger scale (national instead of conference) and is a possible study to build upon

The City of Clarkston is one of Atlanta’s oldest and most diverse communities. The city is currently in need of tactical placemaking strategies to create quality public spaces that can serve and unite the members of the community. This thesis seeks to identify the needs of the city using a comprehensive site analysis and apply that knowledge to determine a program that is best suited for the community. To create an impactful design, applicable placemaking procedures will be identified through literature review and case study analyses. The data collected will inform a design procedural that will yield an outcome that contributes to the environmental, economic, and social sustainability of Clarkston

    Depot Park: An Ecological Showcase

Depot Park is the central gathering space for the City of the Village of Clarkston. Clarkston is a small village located 45 minutes north of Detroit in Southeastern Michigan. The village is approximately one-half mile square, and its small size reflects the community’s desire to uphold the historic village boundaries. Clarkston has a popular influence on surrounding communities, and many neighboring citizens in Independence Township consider themselves from the village, though they live beyond Clarkston’s official boundaries. Depot Park is located in the heart of Clarkston’s historic downtown. The park serves many civic functions throughout the year, including Art in the Park, farmers markets, summer concerts, and car club events. The park has a prime location to educate and inspire the public, and its current popularity engages visitors from Clarkston and surrounding communities. The Clarkston Watershed Group (CWG) is a group of committed citizens that are focused on improving Depot Park and protecting the natural resources of the greater Clarkston area. With its central location and frequent use, Depot Park can become a living tool to illustrate principles of ecological and sustainable design. The park is currently operating without a master plan, which complicates routine decisions such as placement of memorials. The University of Michigan team is providing the Clarkston Watershed Group with a cohesive master plan that will ensure the future success of Depot Park as an inspiring and effective civic space. This University of Michigan Masters Practicum Team specializes in providing designs that are both ecologically sensitive and aesthetically engaging. Our educational background in ecological design complements the environmental enthusiasm of the Clarkston Watershed Group. With the implementation of our master plan and supporting documents, the CWG can continue to foster education and environmental change in and around Depot Park.Master of Landscape ArchitectureNatural Resources and EnvironmentUniversity of Michiganhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/58215/4/Watershed Handbook.pdfhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/58215/3/Final Species List Depot Park.pdfhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/58215/2/Final Display Boards Depot Park.pdfhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/58215/1/Executive Summary_Depot Park_4-14-2008.pd

Transformation and Care in a City of Refuge

    Get PDF
Although there are numerous studies of how resettlement affects refugees, there are fewer examining the dynamic of how refugees and long term residents join together in formal, and to even greater extent, informal relationships of care to reconstitute and reconfigure place. Theorists often focus on the economic, political and historical elements of place identity, ignoring the emotional, phenomenological, and grounded aspects of the everyday construction and experience of place. The production, distribution, and consumption of systems of care in Clarkston has immense impact on the habitual, mundane routines that significantly affect ideas of identity and spill over into social, cultural, economic, and political change. Using a qualitative analysis of interviews and participant observation, the focus of this thesis is on the material, performative, and representational ways in which the dialectical relationships of teacher and student, educator and educated, care-giver and recipient, are transforming the rapidly evolving City of Clarkston
