Design Synthesis of Adaptive Mesoscopic Cellular Structures with Unit Truss Approach and Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm
Cellular material structures have been engineered at the mesoscopic scale for high performance
and multifunctional capabilities. However, the design of adaptive cellular structures - structures with
cellular configurations, sizes, and shapes designed for a specific geometric and loading context - has
not been sufficiently investigated. In this paper, the authors present a design synthesis method with the
use of unit truss approach and particle swarm optimization algorithm to design adaptive cellular
structures. A critical review is presented to show the pros and cons of the new design synthesis method
and an existing homogenization method. The research extends the application of additive
manufacturing in the design of new materials for high performances and benefits its long-term growth.Mechanical Engineerin
Multi-scale space-variant FRep cellular structures
Existing mesh and voxel based modeling methods encounter difficulties when dealing with objects containing cellular structures
on several scale levels and varying their parameters in space. We describe an alternative approach based on using real functions evaluated procedurally at any given point. This allows for modeling fully parameterized, nested and multi-scale cellular
structures with dynamic variations in geometric and cellular properties. The geometry of a base unit cell is defined using Function Representation (FRep) based primitives and operations. The unit cell is then replicated in space using periodic
space mappings such as sawtooth and triangle waves. While being replicated, the unit cell can vary its geometry and topology due
to the use of dynamic parameterization. We illustrate this approach by several examples of microstructure generation within a given volume or
along a given surface. We also outline some methods for direct rendering and fabrication not involving auxiliary mesh and voxel
representations

Instabilities and soot formation in high pressure explosion flames
Flame instabilities, cellular structures and soot formed in high pressure, rich, spherically expanding iso-octane-air flames have been studied experimentally using high speed Schlieren cinematography, OH fluorescence, and laser induced incandescence. Cellular structures with two wavelength ranges developed on the flame surface. In rich flames with equivalence ratio ?> 1.8, soot was formed in a honeycomb-like structure behind flame cracks associated with the large wavelength cellular structure
The topological structure of 2D disordered cellular systems
We analyze the structure of two dimensional disordered cellular systems
generated by extensive computer simulations. These cellular structures are
studied as topological trees rooted on a central cell or as closed shells
arranged concentrically around a germ cell. We single out the most significant
parameters that characterize statistically the organization of these patterns.
Universality and specificity in disordered cellular structures are discussed.Comment: 18 Pages LaTeX, 16 Postscript figure
