The article analyzes the term "biographical method", which can be summarized by the formula "personality is a human life way". Its meaning in the light of the leading domestic and foreign scientists’ views is defined. There has been highlighted the prerequisites for development of the biographical method in the modern historical-pedagogical science as a tool for research of personnel. Jean-Paul Sartre: Mystical Atheist or Mystical Antipathist?

    Get PDF
Jean-Paul Sartre is rarely discussed in the philosophy of religion. In 2009, however, Jerome Gellman broke the silence, publishing an article in which he argued that the source of Sartre’s atheism was neither philosophical nor existential, but mystical. Drawing from several of Sartre’s works – including Being and Nothingness, Words, and a 1943 review entitled ‘A New Mystic’ – I argue that there are strong biographical and philosophical reasons to disagree with Gellman’s conclusion that Sartre was a ‘mystical atheist’. Moreover, I question the likelihood of drawing any definitive conclusions regarding the sources of Sartre’s ambiguous atheism

Name Disambiguation from link data in a collaboration graph using temporal and topological features

    Get PDF
In a social community, multiple persons may share the same name, phone number or some other identifying attributes. This, along with other phenomena, such as name abbreviation, name misspelling, and human error leads to erroneous aggregation of records of multiple persons under a single reference. Such mistakes affect the performance of document retrieval, web search, database integration, and more importantly, improper attribution of credit (or blame). The task of entity disambiguation partitions the records belonging to multiple persons with the objective that each decomposed partition is composed of records of a unique person. Existing solutions to this task use either biographical attributes, or auxiliary features that are collected from external sources, such as Wikipedia. However, for many scenarios, such auxiliary features are not available, or they are costly to obtain. Besides, the attempt of collecting biographical or external data sustains the risk of privacy violation. In this work, we propose a method for solving entity disambiguation task from link information obtained from a collaboration network. Our method is non-intrusive of privacy as it uses only the time-stamped graph topology of an anonymized network. Experimental results on two real-life academic collaboration networks show that the proposed method has satisfactory performance.Comment: The short version of this paper has been accepted to ASONAM 201

Through the use of a system-building approach, an approach that includes finding common ground for the various philosophical paradigms within statistics, Erich L. Lehmann is responsible for much of the synthesis of classical statistical knowledge that developed from the Neyman--Pearson--Wald school. A biographical sketch and a brief summary of some of his many contributions are presented here. His complete bibliography is also included and the references present many other sources of information on his life and his work.Comment: Published in at http://dx.doi.org/10.1214/11-AOS927 the Annals of Statistics (http://www.imstat.org/aos/) by the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (http://www.imstat.org

This study focused on the analysis of Biographical Recount texts in English textbooks and the relevancy of the English textbook to the criteria ofagood source for teaching and learning Biographical Recount text. This study used a descriptive-qualitative method utilising document analysis technique, especially using Transitivity analysis of SFL Framework. The primary data of this study were 4 Biographical Recount texs from Pathway to English for General Program textbook for grade X textbook and Bahasa Inggris untuk Kelas X SMA, SMK-MA textbook implemented 2013 curriculum. The data was analysed following several steps, including explaining the aspects of Biographical Recount texts, such as social purposes, schematic structure and linguistic features. The study reveals two findings. Firstly, almost all of Biographical Recount texts analysed are relevant to the criteria of their purposes; Secondly, the schematic structures of all Biographical Recount texts are consistent with the structures suggested by Knapp & Watkin, (2005), Nafisah & Kurniawan (2007), Hattingh (2011), Emilia & Christie(2013).In terms of linguistic features, the Transitivity analysis finds out that the texts possess the criteria of a good Biographical Recount seen from the frequent use of material processes, and adverbs or adverbial groups. Apart from the findings of schematic structures and linguistic features, there are also some limitations found in the texts e.g. no distinction among the stages, the use of simple present tense and the differences of orientation stage in second text. In spite of the limitations found, it can be derived from the findings that the Recount texts in both textbooks are suitable to be used as sources for learning and teaching English, but somehow it is also suggested to find other sources which provide more explanations, more examples, and more exercises. Keywords : Transitivity analysis, Biographical Recount texts, English textbook

Qualitative archives and biographical research methods. An introduction to the FQS special issue

    Get PDF
The use of archival materials as a point of departure when designing and launching social research takes for granted that a culture of archiving (for sharing and re-use) has rooted time ago in our complex societies. This mentality and research practice first flourished and is fairly well installed in the case of statistics, surveys and certain other primary or secondary documents. On the contrary, it is less frequent and certainly not a routine activity for qualitative data. Only some of the raw and elaborated materials gathered during qualitative research become part of an archive for further reanalysis. These can include the backstage practices and experiences of a project, raw materials such as field notes, audio and visual recordings, and other documents produced during the research process. This issue presents a colorful range of articles that deal with experiences, challenges and opportunities of archiving and re-using qualitative material, particularly under the umbrella of biographical and narrative research. It aims to raise awareness of the importance of archiving in qualitative social research and highlights some of the new methodological reflections and approaches that have been and that are being developed within the European landscape. We hope that the articles in this issue will help promote further communication and exchange among qualitative archival practitioners from different countries and with different sensitivities and conceptual horizons. © 2011 FQS

Federico García Lorca’s ‘impossible’ theatre staged

    Get PDF
This study explores the relatively unknown area of Federico García Lorca’s theatre work which he himself termed ‘impossible’ and ‘unperformable’. With the director’s task of preproduction research in mind, the study examines biographical research as well as focusing discussion on Lorca’s experimentation – as playwright and director – with different artistic styles and techniques seen as ground-breaking in his own time which pre-empted much modern theatre practice. Analysis of primary sources provides a widespread overview of Lorca’s dramatic work: his better-known plays, ‘impossible’ plays, dramatic dialogues and fragments of incomplete pieces as well as interviews and speeches. Key sources include the theories and ideas of professional directors (most prominently Lluís Pasqual) and scholars of Spanish theatre (especially Maria M. Delgado and Gwynne Edwards) as well as biographers (particularly Leslie Stainton). Principally concerned with the challenges presented to modern theatre-makers and the possibilities and guides for directors tackling these plays, the study concludes with reflection on the production of An Impossible Dream of Life which was composed from Lorca’s The Dream of Life and extracts from his other works to make up the practice-based component of this research project
