Nobles in the Flemish Urban Network. A Quantitative Analysis of the Urban Nobility of Late Medieval and Early Modern Bruges - In this contribution, a series of lists of Flemish nobles, compiled by the princely administration for military and political purposes, is used to measure the presence of nobles in the Flemish city of Bruges and the surrounding countryside. Diachronological analysis shows that noble involvement increased considerably since the middle of fourteenth century. Next to the presence of several families from the high nobility, the state formation process offered chances to bureaucrats to join the ranks of the local nobility. From the fifteenth century onwards, a growing part of the Bruges urban patriciate also succeeded to attain noble rank. The overlap between those different groups was modest, but the intense cultural life of Bruges provided the high nobility, state officials and urban elites with ample opportunity for social and cultural interaction. While the growing involvement of the late medieval and early modern nobility in urban networks deserves further attention, the concept of ‘urban nobility’ does not do justice to the important differences between various noble groups in Bruges, nor to the intricate interlinking of urban and rural interests of noble families

Striking a balance between culture and fun: 'Quality' meets hitman genre in 'In Bruges'

This is an Author's Accepted Manuscript of an article published in New Review of Film and Television Studies, 9(2), 132 - 151, 2011, copyright Taylor & Francis, available online at: http://www.tandfonline.com/10.1080/17400309.2011.556934.This paper gives an analysis of In Bruges (2008) that situates the film as a hybrid product offering a mixture of signifiers of cinematic ‘quality’ and ‘lower’ genre ingredients. This paper also considers the extent to which In Bruges offers a combination of tonal registers in which irony and detachment, as markers of distinction, are blended with a more mainstream-oriented appeal to emotional engagement on the part of the viewer, and considers how this might be related to the broader social and industrial contexts in which it appeared

I bruges DNA-markÞrer allered i mange forÊdlingsvirksomheder. I Danmark bruges dem primÊrt til at teste of virusresistens og til at undersÞge nedarvning af specifikke kromosomfragmenter gennem forÊdlingsprocessen

Dissimilarity Clustering by Hierarchical Multi-Level Refinement

We introduce in this paper a new way of optimizing the natural extension of the quantization error using in k-means clustering to dissimilarity data. The proposed method is based on hierarchical clustering analysis combined with multi-level heuristic refinement. The method is computationally efficient and achieves better quantization errors than theComment: 20-th European Symposium on Artificial Neural Networks, Computational Intelligence and Machine Learning (ESANN 2012), Bruges : Belgium (2012

W+jets as a background to top physics: the quest for many jets

    Get PDF
The latest progress in calculating electroweak gauge boson production in association with QCD jets at hadron colliders is summarized. Particular emphasis is given to the recently completed QCD one-loop calculations of W+3jets and Wb final states. Furthermore recent developments in improving Monte Carlo event generators by means of combining tree-level matrix elements with parton showers is reviewed.Comment: Talk given at Top 2010, Bruges, Belgium, May 31 - June 4, 201

Fourth Generation -- Towards Effect of Large Yukawa Coupling

In this talk we cover two threads regarding the 4th generation: on CP violation, from Earth up to the Heavens, i.e. from accelerator-based experimental studies, towards baryon asymmetry of the Universe; and on direct search bounds on mtâ€Čm_{t'} and mbâ€Čm_{b'}, towards the possibility of electroweak symmetry breaking through large Yukawa couplings. Prospects and discussions are presented.Comment: Plenary talk presented at TOP2010, May 31 - June 4, 2010, Bruges, Belgiu

Role of the direct processes in low-energy deuteron interactions

An extended analysis of the key role of direct interactions, i.e., breakup, stripping and pick-up processes, has been carried out for deuteron-induced reactions. Particular comments concern the deuteron breakup which is the dominant mechanism involved in surrogate reactions on heavy nuclei, around the Coulomb barrier.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. A targeted public: public services in fifteenth-century Ghent and Bruges

    Get PDF
Though the phrase 'public services' is a nineteenth-century invention, which was supported by a developed rhetoric of political economy, this article shows that the concept, practice and supply of such services could also be found in the medieval city. It specifically analyses three areas of urban service provision: jurisprudence and legal security, infrastructure and finally health care and poor relief. Although the available sources tend to stress the involvement of municipal authorities in providing public services, it turns out that in fact the furnishing of services was highly multi-layered. In all three areas studied, a wide range of public and private institutions offered services to specific groups within late medieval urban society. In contrast to what the notion of 'public services' lets us presume, however, public services in the medieval city were not available to all inhabitants. Instead, the provision of services was usually quite restrictive, and targeted particular groups in society
