Hercules and Wolf 630 Stellar Streams and Galactic Bar Kinematics

We have identified the four most significant features in the UV velocity distribution of solar neighborhood stars: H1, H2 in the Hercules stream and W1, W2 in the Wolf 630 stream. We have formulated the problem of determining several characteristics of the central Galactic bar independently from each of the identified features by assuming that the Hercules and Wolf 630 streams are of a bar-induced dynamical nature. The problem has been solved by constructing 2:1 resonant orbits in the rotating bar frame for each star in these streams. Analysis of the resonant orbits found has shown that the bar pattern speed is 45-55 km/s/kpc, while the bar angle lies within the range 40-60 degrees. The results obtained are consistent with the view that the Hercules and Wolf 630 streams could be formed by a long-term influence of the Galactic bar leading to a characteristic bimodal splitting of the UV velocity plane.Comment: 16 pages, 3 tables, 5 figure

    K-Space Interactive Search

In this paper we will present the K-Space1 Interactive Search system for content-based video information retrieval to be demonstrated in the VideOlympics. This system is an exten-sion of the system we developed as part of our participation in TRECVID 2007 [1]. In TRECVID 2007 we created two interfaces, known as the ‘Shot’ based and ‘Broadcast’ based interfaces. Our VideOlympics submission takes these two in-terfaces and the lessons learned from our user experiments, to create a single user interface which attempts to leverage the best aspects of both

In general, this study is to reveal the impact of individual differencestoward reading comprehension. For the limitation of the study, the researcherinvolves gender and reading strategies as the exogenous variables (independentvariables) and reading comprehension as the endogenousvariable (dependantvariable). This study is quantitative employing t-test independent sample andregression. The subjects of the study are 152 students at University ofMuhammadiyah Malang. The procedure to collect the data in this study involvedtwo kinds of instruments which were a set of test and a set of questionnaire. Thetest is used to collect the data related to the students reading comprehension.Meanwhile, the questionnaire is distributed to participants in order to find outreading strategy used by the participants. All the data obtained from theparticipants are statistically calculated, analyzed and described by utilizing SPSS16.0.Based on the data analysis, it revealed that the female students performedbetter than their female counterparts as the mean score showed68.1184 and58.9342 respectively. In addition, in terms of reading strategies, 64 students out of152 were high user of reading strategies; their score ranged from 102-105.Furthermore, the vast majority of the students showed either medium orsatisfactory level in reading comprehension, 30.3 per cent and 35.5 per centrespectively. The correlation coefficient between students‟ reading strategies andtheir reading comprehension ability was .58. It means that there a significant orpositive correlation between both of them.Due to several weaknesses found in this study, several recommendationsare made for the future researchers who have interest to conduct similar studies.First, in terms of the sampling, this study involves only 152 participants, furtherstudy needs to involve bigger number of participants, especially by fulfilling therecommended ration of sampling with 20:1 ratio. Using the proposed number ofthe participants may avoid bias to the results of the study. Furthermore, in termsof the sampling techniques, the future researchers are suggested to use randomsampling techniques in order to provide more generalized findings. . Furthermore, future researchers are suggested to consider other factors of individual differencessuch as age, aptitude, motivation, learning styles, or personality to provide moremeaningful interpretation

Ratio of the Isolated Photon Cross Sections at \sqrt{s} = 630 and 1800 GeV

    Get PDF
The inclusive cross section for production of isolated photons has been measured in \pbarp collisions at s=630\sqrt{s} = 630 GeV with the \D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The photons span a transverse energy (ETE_T) range from 7-49 GeV and have pseudorapidity η<2.5|\eta| < 2.5. This measurement is combined with to previous \D0 result at s=1800\sqrt{s} = 1800 GeV to form a ratio of the cross sections. Comparison of next-to-leading order QCD with the measured cross section at 630 GeV and ratio of cross sections show satisfactory agreement in most of the ETE_T range.Comment: 7 pages. Measuring the Implementation of an Ethics Initiative: Child Protection in Scottish Sport

    Get PDF
Methodologies for measuring the implementation of social inclusion and ethics in sport frequently draw on social marketing techniques or stage models of health behaviour change. This paper illustrates how a composite model of cultural change in sport can be used to monitor progress and trace resistance to ethics and social inclusion work in sport. The Scottish research was commissioned by sportscotland to assess how their child protection programme had impacted on a selection of Scottish governing bodies of sport. Fifteen sports were identified by the funder to take part in the research, of which 12 agreed to participate. Telephone and face-to-face interviews were held with key stakeholders at national and club level and supplementary focus groups were held with a small number of club level child protection officers. The results indicate a spread of responses in the different organisations with the following distribution: leaders (5), sceptics (2), followers (4) and resisters (1). These results are discussed in relation to the general cultural shift from ‘permissive’ to ‘prescriptive’ in the agencies responsible for overseeing Scottish child protection in sport

    State-guided entrepreneurship: A case study

The premise that active engagement by the state in business is crucial for small, developing economies for global competitiveness is based on the assumption that the state has the wherewithal to support such competitiveness. This paper advocates the view that governments of developing economies should be involved in business. While this view goes against the trend of popular and current thinking of the free market economy and a non-interventionist government, it needs to be recognized that such ideals are beyond many struggling, developing economies whose space in the global economy is heavily constricted by the presence of the developed economies. Using Singapore, more specifically, its government-owned company Temasek Holdings, as a case study, this paper argues that the concept of state-guided entrepreneurship has beenapplied successfully based on the hypothesis offered in this paper

miR-630 targets IGF1R to regulate response to HER-targeting drugs and overall cancer cell progression in HER2 over-expressing breast cancer

Background: While the treatment of HER2 over-expressing breast cancer with recent HER-targeted drugs has been highly effective for some patients, primary (also known as innate) or acquired resistance limits the success of these drugs. microRNAs have potential as diagnostic, prognostic and predictive biomarkers, as well as replacement therapies. Here we investigated the role of microRNA-630 (miR-630) in breast cancer progression and as a predictive biomarker for response to HER-targeting drugs, ultimately yielding potential as a therapeutic approach to add value to these drugs. Methods: We investigated the levels of intra- and extracellular miR-630 in cells and conditioned media from breast cancer cell lines with either innate- or acquired- resistance to HER-targeting lapatinib and neratinib, compared to their corresponding drug sensitive cell lines, using qPCR. To support the role of miR-630 in breast cancer, we examined the clinical relevance of this miRNA in breast cancer tumours versus matched peritumours. Transfection of miR-630 mimics and inhibitors was used to manipulate the expression of miR-630 to assess effects on response to HER-targeting drugs (lapatinib, neratinib and afatinib). Other phenotypic changes associated with cellular aggressiveness were evaluated by motility, invasion and anoikis assays. TargetScan prediction software, qPCR, immunoblotting and ELISAs, were used to assess miR-630’s regulation of mRNA, proteins and their phosphorylated forms. Results: We established that introducing miR-630 into cells with innate- or acquired- resistance to HER-drugs significantly restored the efficacy of lapatinib, neratinib and afatinib; through a mechanism which we have determined to, at least partly, involve miR-630’s regulation of IGF1R. Conversely, we demonstrated that blocking miR-630 induced resistance/insensitivity to these drugs. Cellular motility, invasion, and anoikis were also observed as significantly altered by miR-630 manipulation, whereby introducing miR-630 into cells reduced cellular aggression while inhibition of miR-630 induced a more aggressive cellular phenotype. Conclusions: Taken together, our findings suggest miR-630 as a key regulator of cancer cell progression in HER2 over-expressing breast cancer, through targeting of IGF1R. This study supports miR-630 as a diagnostic and a predictive biomarker for response to HER-targeted drugs and indicates that the therapeutic addition of miR-630 may enhance and improve patients’ response to HER-targeting drugs
