Magnetoelectric properties of 500 nm Cr2O3 films

    Get PDF
The linear magnetoelectric effect was measured in 500 nm Cr2O3 films grown by rf sputtering on Al2O3 substrates between top and bottom thin film Pt electrodes. Magnetoelectric susceptibility was measured directly by applying an AC electric field and measuring the induced AC magnetic moment using superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry. A linear dependence of the induced AC magnetic moment on the AC electric field amplitude was found. The temperature dependence of the magnetoelectric susceptibility agreed qualitatively and quantitatively with prior measurements of bulk single crystals, but the characteristic temperatures of the film were lower than those of single crystals. It was also possible to reverse the sign of the magnetoelectric susceptibility by reversing the sign of the magnetic field applied during cooling through the N\'eel temperature. A competition between total magnetoelectric and Zeeman energies is proposed to explain the difference between film and bulk Cr2O3 regarding the cooling field dependence of the magnetoelectric effect.Comment: accepted at Physical Review

Tantalum-based diffusion barriers in Si/Cu VLSI metallizations

We have studied sputter-deposited Ta, Ta36Si14, and Ta36Si14N50 thin films as diffusion barriers between Cu overlayers and Si substrates. Electrical measurements on Si n + p shallow junction diodes demonstrate that a 180-nm-thick Ta film is not an effective diffusion barrier. For the standard test of 30-min annealing in vacuum applied in the present study, the Ta barrier fails after annealing at 500 °C. An amorphous Ta74Si26 thin film improves the performance by raising the failure temperature of a /Ta74Si26(100 nm)/Cu(500 nm) metallization to 650 °C. Unparalled results are obtained with an amorphous ternary Ta36Si14N50 thin film in the Si/Ta36Si14N50 (120 nm)/Cu(500 nm) and in the Si/TiSi2(30 nm)/Ta36SiN50 (80 nm)/Cu(500 nm) metallization that break down only after annealing at 900 °C. The failure is induced by a premature crystallization of the Ta36Si14N50 alloy (whose crystallization temperature exceeds 1000 °C) when in contact with copper

Oxytocin at physiological concentrations evokes adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) release from corticotrophs by increasing intracellular free calcium mobilized mainly from intracellular stores. Oxytocin displays synergistic or additive effects on ACTH-releasing factor or arginine vasopressin-induced ACTH secretion, respectively

The potency of oxytocin (OT) in evoking ACTH secretion by isolated, superfused rat adenohypophyseal corticotrophs and its enhancement by CRF and arginine vasopressin (AVP) were analyzed. Each secretagogue effectively released ACTH from adenohypophyseal cells when added separately in pulsatile fashion in physiological concentrations based on hypophyseal portal blood (OT, 10 nM; AVP, 0.5 nM; CRF, 0.1 nM). OT released ACTH at concentrations as low as 1 nM. Moreover, a dose- response relationship up to 10 microM was revealed. Combinations of a constant amount of CRF (0.1 nM) with increasing concentrations of OT exerted a synergistic effect on ACTH release. In contrast, OT given in various concentrations in combination with AVP (0.5 nM) produced an additive effect on ACTH release. To study the mechanism of action of OT on ACTH secretion, cytosolic free calcium levels in single pituitary cells exposed to OT or AVP were measured using the calcium-sensitive fluorescent indicator Fura-2. Corticotrophs among mixed adenohypophyseal cell types in the primary cultures were identified by immunocytochemistry. More than 500 cells were individually stimulated with OT or AVP. Basal cytosolic free calcium levels ranged between 80- 130 nM free calcium. The addition of 100 nM OT or 1 microM AVP increased the cytosolic free calcium concentration within 3 sec to values ranging from 500-800 nM. An increase in intracellular calcium ranging from 200-500 nM due to OT could still be observed after extracellular calcium depletion. Taken together, our data demonstrate that physiological concentrations of OT stimulate ACTH secretion, independent of the other ACTH secretagogues, by mobilizing calcium mainly from intracellular stores

Influence of Homogeneous Interfaces on the Strength of 500 nm Diameter Cu Nanopillars

    Get PDF
Interfaces play an important role in crystalline plasticity as they affect strength and often serve as obstacles to dislocation motion. Here we investigate effects of grain and nanotwin boundaries on uniaxial strength of 500 nm diameter Cu nanopillars fabricated by e-beam lithography and electroplating. Uniaxial compression experiments reveal that strength is lowered by introducing grain boundaries and significantly rises when twin boundaries are present. Weakening is likely due to the activation of grain-boundary-mediated processes, while impeding dislocation glide can be responsible for strengthening by twin boundaries

TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF PHOTOCHEMISTRY IN PHYCOERYTHROCYANIN α-SUBUNIT

    Get PDF
The photochemical activities of phycoerythrocyanin α-subunits from Mastigocladus laminosus separated by isoelectric focusing were tested by irradiating at 500, 550, 577 and 600 nm. Two types of photoreversible photochromic responses have been characterized by absorption and absorption difference spectroscopy. Type I is the well-known absorption shift from 571 to 506 nm. Type II is a new response characterized by a line-broadening of the 570 nm absorption

Superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors with non-periodic dielectric multilayers

We present superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SSPDs) on non-periodic dielectric multilayers, which enable us to design a variety of wavelength dependences of optical absorptance by optimizing the dielectric multilayer. By adopting a robust simulation to optimize the dielectric multilayer, we designed three types of SSPDs with target wavelengths of 500 nm, 800 nm, and telecom range respectively. We fabricated SSPDs based on the optimized designs for 500 and 800 nm, and evaluated the system detection efficiency at various wavelengths. The results obtained confirm that the designed SSPDs with non-periodic dielectric multilayers worked well. This versatile device structure can be effective for multidisciplinary applications in fields such as the life sciences and remote sensing that require high efficiency over a precise spectral range and strong signal rejection at other wavelengths

The linear magnetoelectric effect was measured in 500-nm Cr2O3 films grown by radio frequency sputtering on Al2O3 substrates between top and bottom thin film Pt electrodes. Magnetoelectric susceptibility was measured directly by applying an alternating current (ac) electric field and measuring the induced ac magnetic moment using superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry. It was also possible to reverse the sign of the magnetoelectric susceptibility by reversing the sign of the magnetic field applied during cooling through the NĂ©el temperature. A competition between total magnetoelectric and Zeeman energies is proposed to explain the difference between film and bulk Cr2O3 regarding the cooling field dependence of the magnetoelectric effect

We demonstrate the operation of a cascaded continuous wave (CW) mode-locked Raman oscillator. The output pulses were compressed from 28 ps at 532 nm down to 6.5 ps at 559 nm (first Stokes) and 5.5 ps at 589 nm (second Stokes). The maximum output was 2.5 W at 559 nm and 1.4 W at 589 nm with slope efficiencies up to 52%. This technique allows simple and efficient generation of short-pulse radiation to the cascaded Stokes wavelengths, extending the mode-locked operation of Raman lasers to a wider range of visible wavelengths between 500 - 650 nm based on standard inexpensive picosecond Nd:YAG oscillators
