    On tests of local realism by CP-violation parameters of K^0 mesons

    Recently various papers have proposed to test local realism (LR) by considering electroweak CP-violation parameters values in neutral pseudoscalar meson systems. Considering the large interest for a conclusive test of LR and the experimental accessibility to these tests, in this paper we critically consider these results showing how they, albeit very interesting, require anyway additional assumptions and therefore cannot be considered conclusive tests of LR

    Grosswald's conjecture is that g(p)g(p), the least primitive root modulo pp, satisfies g(p)p2g(p) \leq \sqrt{p} - 2 for all p>409p>409. We make progress towards this conjecture by proving that g(p)p2g(p) \leq \sqrt{p} -2 for all 409<p<2.5×1015409<p< 2.5\times 10^{15} and for all p>3.67×1071p>3.67\times 10^{71}.Comment: 7 page

    Academic credit and career education for engineering and surveying students

    Research has indicated the potential of career education for academic credit at university. This case study describes how a university careers service integrated careers education workshops into the academic curriculum of an engineering and surveying faculty. Workshops on Job Skills and Career Transition were presented to 118 undergraduate students. Participants completed assignments for academic credit. These were 'marked' by career counsellors and follow-up careers counselling was provided to interested individuals. This pilot project confirms the utility of curriculum-integrated career education. Implications for career education across an entire undergraduate degree course and on-line education are raised

    Molecular diversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi colonising Hyacinthoides non-scripta (bluebell) in a seminatural woodland

    Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi form symbiotic associations with plant roots. Around 150 species have been described and it is becoming clear that many of these species have different functional properties. The species diversity of AM fungi actively growing in roots is therefore an important component of ecosystem diversity. However, it is difficult to identify AM fungi below the genus level from morphology in planta, as they possess few informative characters. We present here a molecular method for identifying infrageneric sequence types that estimate the taxonomic diversity of AM fungi present in actively growing roots. Bluebell roots were sampled from beneath two different canopy types, oak and sycamore, and DNA sequences were amplified from roots by the polymerase chain reaction with fungal-specific primers for part of the small subunit ribosomal RNA gene. Restriction fragment length polymorphism among 141 clones was assessed and 62 clones were sequenced. When aligned, discrete sequence groups emerged that cluster into the three families of AM fungi: Acaulosporaceae, Gigasporaceae and Glomaceae. The sequence variation is consistent with rRNA secondary structure. The same sequence types were found at both sampling times. Frequencies of Scutellospora increased in December, and Acaulospora increased in abundance in July. Sites with a sycamore canopy show a reduced abundance of Acaulospora, and those with oak showed a reduced abundance of Glomus. These distribution patterns are consistent with previous morphological studies carried out in this woodland. The molecular method provides an alternative method of estimating the distribution and abundance of AM fungi, and has the potential to provide greater resolution at the infrageneric level

    International competition and the rapidly global economy, unified by improved communication and transportation, offer to the consumers an enormous choice of goods and services. The result is that companies now require quality, value, time to market and innovation to be successful in order to win the increasing competition. In the engineering sector this is traduced in need of optimization of the design process and in maximization of re-use of data and knowledge already existing in the company. The “SIMI-Pro” (Semantic Information Management system for Innovative Product design) system addresses specific deficiencies in the conceptual phase of product design when knowledge management, if applied, is often sectorial. Its main contribution is in allowing easy, fast and centralized collection of data from multiple sources and in supporting the retrieval and re-use of a wide range of data that will help stylists and engineers shortening the production cycle. SIMI-Pro will be one of the first prototypes to base its information management and its knowledge sharing system on process ontology and it will demonstrate how the use of centralized network systems, coupled with Semantic Web technologies, can improve inter-working activities and interdisciplinary knowledge sharing

    Final Report: Wall Effects in Cavity Flows

    The wall effects in cavity flows past an arbitrary two-dimensional body is investigated for both pure-drag and lifting cases based on an inviscid nonlinear flow theory. The over-all features of various theoretical flow models for inviscid cavity flows under the wall effects are discussed from the general momentum consideration in comparison with typical viscous, incompressible wake flows in a channel. In the case of pure drag cavity flows, three theoretical models in common use, namely, the open-wake, Riabouchinsky and re-entrant jet models, are applied to evaluate the solution. Methods of numerical computation are discussed for bodies of arbitrary shape, and are carried out in detail for wedges of all angles. The final numerical results are compared between the different flow models, and the differences pointed out. Further analysis of the results has led to development of several useful formulas for correcting the wall effect. In the lifting flow case, the wall effect on the pressure and hydrodynamic forces acting on arbitrary body is formulated for the choked cavity flow in a closed water tunnel of arbitrary shape, and computed for the flat plate with a finite cavity in a straight tunnel

    A user-centered approach to rushes summarisation via highlight-detected keyframes

    We present our keyframe-based summary approach for BBC Rushes video as part of the TRECVid Summarisation benchmark evaluation carried out in 2007. We outline our approach to summarisation that uses video processing for feature extraction and is informed by human factors considerations for summary presentation. Based on the performance of our generated summaries as reported by NIST, we subsequently undertook detailed failure analysis of our approach. The findings of this investigation as well as recommendations for alterations to our keyframe-based summary generation method, and the evaluation methodology for Rushes summaries in general, are detailed within this paper
