Methods of teaching music in preschool institutions, then and now

Abstract

This thesis explores the role of music in children's development, changes in music teaching methods throughout history, contemporary approaches in music education, and the specific experiences of educators from different regions of Croatia. Music emerges as a key element in children's emotional, cognitive, and social development, with positive effects extending from the prenatal period to adolescence. A historical review reveals the evolution of pedagogical approaches, from traditional to innovative strategies that include technology and interactive content. Contemporary methods emphasize the importance of tailoring learning to the individual needs of the child, integrating movement into cognitive activities, and utilizing digital platforms like YouTube to enhance language and communication skills. Field research, involving interviews with educators from Slavonia and Istria, provides insight into the practical application of these methods in preschool institutions. Although the basic pedagogical approaches do not significantly differ, the content of teaching reflects cultural and regional characteristics, enriching the educational process with the uniqueness of the local community. This work encourages further discussion and research in the field of music education, highlighting the need for a holistic approach that values music as a means of enriching children's development and education. The conclusion of the paper emphasizes the importance of ongoing investment in the professional development of educators and the availability of quality musical and educational resources, to enable every child to reach their full potential through music
