Washington and Illinois Streets, Indianapolis

Abstract

The intersection of Washington and Illinois Streets at the heart of the busy capitol city less than 100 years after its founding. The automobile has not yet taken over the streets as pedestrians and streetcars mingle. Washington Street is the name of the National Road as it passes through Indianapolis. This area was the hub of commerce and transportation until the mid twentieth century when many businesses began moving to suburban areas. By the end of the century, the area had been revitalized
