Governor Paul V. McNutt

Abstract

Paul McNutt grew up in Martinsville, Indiana, and went to Indiana University. He received his law degree from Harvard University. In 1925 he became Indiana University's youngest Dean. From 1932-1940 he was governor of Indiana. In Terre Haute in 1935 labor unions called for a strike at the Columbian Enameling and Stamping Company plant due to the management's refusal to arbitrate on the matter of a closed shop. After four months of impasse the city's unions announced a "labor holiday" for July 22. This general strike shut down all businesses except for critical services. Gov. McNutt declared martial law and dispatched troops to the city. After two days of some violence the strike ended.
