Lyman Skinner Ayres

Abstract

Born on a farm near Oswego, N.Y., Lyman Ayres moved to Ohio as a young man and worked as a foot-peddler selling maps, frames, and pictures. A year later he bought a wagon, filled it with dry goods, and circulated through northeast Ohio. In 1864 he and a partner opened a store in Geneva, N.Y. In 1872 Ayres bought interest in the firm of N.R. Smith doing business as the “Trade Palace” 26-28 West Washington Street in the fast growing city of Indianapolis.Destination Indiana - L.S.
