Gene Stratton-Porter was born in Wabash County, and lived in Adams and Noble counties. As a nature photographer, her photographs were published in national magazines. Her first novel, The Song of the Cardinal, was a success, but her second book, Freckles, brought her national acclaim. In 1920, she moved to California to form a movie company and produce several films based on her books. In 1924 she was killed in a traffic accident in Los Angeles.Destination Indiana Women at Work Journe
