Opinions of Future Primary Education Teachers on Multimedia Teaching

Abstract

Today children start school with already developed skills of using digital media. They are exposed to the media since the day they were born. This is the reason why teachers should abandon the traditional way of teaching and embrace modern, student-directed education. Modern teaching is based on constructivism and multimedia-based learning. Constructivist teaching activates the individual who learns through cognitive and physical activities. On the other hand, multimedia-based teaching achieves the objectives by combining different media which complement each other in corresponding strategies of learning and teaching regarding the wanted outcome. A study on what the future primary school teachers think of multimedia-based learning has been conducted. It the first part of this paper key terms are theoretically presented, while the second part deals with the aforementioned study. The study has been conducted online using the application Google Docs and it involved 118 participants. After the data has been processed it can be seen that there are no statistically important differences in opinion among the future teachers regarding their sex, age and place of residence. The results indicate that the future primary teachers consider that there is not enough multimedia-based learning and that teachers rarely use multimedia due to the lack of competence. A big problem is the fact that schools are inadequately equipped and teachers are burdened by paperwork. Despite this, the future primary school teachers are interested in implementing multimedia in their classes
