SHIPPING COMPANY'S FUNCTION IN THE ORGANIZATION OF MULTIMODAL TRANSPORT OF CONTAINERIZED GOODS

Abstract

Modern global tendency of market-trade exchange is gradually found a solution by using multimodal integrated system. The concept of containerization and multimodality is of a great importance for the development of the port system in a way that containerization technically accelerates and improves the process of transportation and cargo handling, while multimodal, on the other hand, combines multiple modes of transport and thus allows transport '' door to door ''. The aim of multimodal transportation of containerized goods is to transport goods faster, safer and with minimal costs from a producer to a consumer. With the economy of scale, achieved through the implementation of larger vessels and joining shipping companies in so-called alliances, which is an important theme of the past few years in the container liner shipping, is achieved by reduction of operational costs. Due to the mentioned aims of the container shipping and multimodality in general, the emphasize is on a shipping company, as an organizer of multimodal transportation of containerized goods from a seller premises to the unloading port, or from the port of loading to the buyer’s premises. This thesis deals with the study of the increasing growth and development of containerization, the importance of multimodal transport of containerized goods and to substantiating the example of how a multimodal transport of containerized goods ''from door to door'' looks from the point of a shipping company and in the shipping company’s organization
