WhisPER. A MATLAB toolbox for performing quantitative and qualitative listening tests.

whisper release 1.9.1WhisPER is a MATLAB based software package for performing experiments in the field of both perceptual audio evaluation and psychoacoustic measurement. It was developed by the audio communication group of the TU Berlin. WhisPER provides convenient means for both controlling the playback environment and for interacting with test subjects, e.g., featuring a GUI system easily accessible to experimenters without advanced programming skills, and allowing to control sound reproduction environments utilizing the OpenSound Control (OSC) protocol. Moreover, whisPER is structured modularly, allowing for convenient future extensions. To date, whisPER covers some test methods popular in quantitative and quantitative perceptual audio research: different adaptive psychometric threshold procedures, a repertory grid test, a semantic differential test, an ABX detection test, a rating test for intermediate audio quality according to ITU-R Rec. BS.1534-1 (MUSHRA), a rating rating test for high audio quality according to ITU-R Rec. BS.1116-1 (ABC/HR), and a dedicated test featuring the Spatial Audio Quality Inventory.
