It All Began with a Vision

By 500 Festival

Abstract

After much discussion in the community, Alex Clark, Joe Quinn, J. Worth Baker and Howdy Wilcox, prominent leaders in the city, met one day in February 1957 and created a framework for governance of the 500 Festival. Modeling the structure after the race itself, they created a 33-member board of directors. In only 65 days, the 500 Festival debuted. The first 500 Festival consisted of a parade and a gala ball the night before the race. The Festival organizers were abuzz with their accomplishments.Use of this image is restricted to projects related to Destination Indiana.
