Los usos de la historia: memoria y olvido en los comunicados del EZLN

By Sofía Rojo Arias

<span>The present work examines the different ways in which history is used and the motives behind the attempts by the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (Ejército Zapatista de LIberación Nacional-ezln) to retrieve history. Starting out from the identification which the ezln has proposed for itself, from the choice of name (Zapatista) on, the question is raised as to why history is so important in these texts. The ezln has tried to bring the history of the indigenous peoples, in form the dark, to retrieve the past in order to regain their community identity. From historical forgetfulness and neglect has arisen an identity marked by suffering and sacrifice; an identity which is used by the ezln to explain and justify their struggle.</span
