A Registry and Database for Gerontology Research: The Teaching Nursing Home Approach to Medical Services for the Elderly

By Rex S. Green, William Steinmann, Nancy Ellis, Linda O'Brien, Allan Pack, Powell Lawton, Dorothea Pfohl, Audrey Stein and Elias Abrutyn

A subject registry and clinical research database were created in 1983 as part of a National Institute of Aging Teaching Nursing Home award to the Philadelphia Gerontology Research Consortium. The registry enables medical researchers to locate subjects for their studies. It also helps researchers decide if there are enough potential subjects for proposed studies. The design of the database emphasizes data that provide the context for studies of specific diseases, as well as facilitate the computerization of medical records systems for participating life-care communities and nursing homes. Studies of epidemiological issues in gerontology are being planned
