A CONTRIBUTION TO THE CONNOISSEURSHIP OF THE REPRODUCTIVE CHARACTERS IN TRUE BRED AND CROSSED SAWS

Abstract

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the reproductive performance and the repeatability coefficients of Large White, Swedish Landrace and thear F₁ crosses under large scale condition in PIK Đakovo. The investigations were carried out on 48 sows of Large White, 26 sows of Swedish Landrace, 125 sows of F₁ crosses and their 796 litters obtained from four succesive farrowings. All piglets were weaned at four weeks after partum. Reproductive data were subjected to analysis of variance by the method of multiple classification and equal subclass numbers. The repeatability coefficients were calculated by the method of intraclass correlation as described by Snedecor and Cochran (1967). The standard errors were calculated by the method of Swiger et al. (1964). On the basis of obtained results the following conclusions may be drawn: 1. All theree breeds of sows had a similar litter size at partum; crossbreeding did not result in litter superiority. 2. Littrt orders did not have significant effect on litter size and litter weight in Large White and Swedish Landrace, but F₁ crosses have had significantly smaller litter size and litter weight at partum and weaning time, respectively (P 0.05), in the first litter than in all other litters. 3. Breed of sows did not have significant effect on litter weight at partum, but F₁ crosses have had significantly lighter litter at weaning time than purebred sows (P 0.05). 4. The highest repeatability coefficients were obtained in Swedish Landrace for liveborn piglets (0.302), total number of born piglets (0.248) and litter weight at partum (0.238). 5. The lowest repeatability coefficients were obtained for litter size and litter weight at weaning time for sows of all three breeds
