The sublime in stave churches

By NA Nick Matulessy and S Steffie Raemaekers

Abstract

Stimulated by merely an image. Never had I seen a church or any other building which I could use as a kind of reference in order to make a mental image stave church in Bogund, Norway. Long after the first glimpse of the church I noticed that the scale of the building was completely different than I thought the first time. How can it be that I always expected that the larger and more richly detailed a church is, the more impressing it will be? The Borgund stave church is the first you will find searching the internet for Norway and church . Why is a small church like that so popular
