A ten-item scale of public knowledge about cancer was developed and pre-tested before being used in a community survey of public awareness of cancer. Factor analysis and item analysis showed that the scale items clustered around a single dimension of cancer knowledge. Reliability was confirmed by the test-retest method. Investigation of several socio-demographic variables showed cancer knowledge to be related, but only weakly, to age, amount of schooling, post-school qualifications and sex.
