Analysis and reduction of machine tool non-rigid errors

Sources of machine tool errors and current error compensation methods are reviewed and methods proposed to provide an efficient platform for the improvement of machine tool accuracy using a novel off-line technique for the analysis and compensation of non-rigid errors.\ud Static and dynamic load conditions are considered representative of the actual machining operation and their effects on non-rigid errors throughout the machine working volume. These include variation of component mass from blank to finish machined conditions, position of the component and worktable, cutting loads and gravitational effects on the machine structural elements.\ud The significance of non-rigid errors on machine tool accuracy and the significance of slide-ways and ball-screws on the non-rigid errors are to be explored. Methods to quantify the position and magnitude of the maximum non-rigid error and optimisation of component and worktable position and their effect on non-rigid errors are to be determined.\ud Methods for validation of simulation data are considered
