A Study of Usage on English Prepositions

本稿は,英語前置詞の用法の中でも,とりわけat,on,inの3つについて,主として多くの日本人学習者には捉えにくいと思われる用例を取り上げ,その中核的な意味を重視する立場から,記述的な語法研究を試みようとするものである。調査の結果,すべての用例に必ずしも妥当性の高い説明がつけられるわけではないことが分かったが,それは主として話し手の主観的な判断そのものが,意味・用法に大きく影響を与えることがあるからであると考えられる。しかし,これは言語によくあることであり,むしろこのような言語の性質を理解し,柔軟に対応する力を養うべきであると考えられる。そこで本稿では,それぞれの前置詞が,どのような語につけばどのような意味になるのか,また,前置詞が変わればその意味はどのように変わるのかということを,話し手の主観をも取り入れながら分かりやすく具体的に記述した。また,このような地道な語法研究が,前置詞の指導や習得に効果的であることをも提言した。This paper is intended as a study of usage on English prepositions, especially at, on and in, on the basis of their core meanings. Usage on English prepositions is one of the most difficult areas in learning and teaching English as a foreign language, and so we mainly dealt with those uses of the three prepositions whose subtlety and complexity are difficult to grasp. It was found, as a result of our research, that we cannot necessarily explain every use of prepositions with ample adequacy, but it seems that this is mainly because the subjective judgments (the differences of cognition) by speakers affect what preposition to use according as how they see the situation. However, this is often the case with languages, and learners of English should understand such nature of the language, and they should make every effort to cultivate the competence to flexibly use English prepositions. So, in this paper, we considered many concrete examples with the three prepositions, putting much emphasis on what each sentence means and how the meaning of it changes when a different preposition is employed, sometimes by taking into account the differences produced by speakers' subjective judgements. We also suggested that a steady investigation into the meanings and nuances of English prepositions can be an effective way to master them
