Concerning food protection against insect attacks the most vulnerable points within the production- and distribution-line (transport, storage, and retail) are localized in retail markets. Although events of insect attacks are recorded only once within three to four years, manufacturers are fully responsible for losses which are frequently very high. Additionally, these casualities are combined with a serious loss of reputation. As a matter of principle, the protection of food against insect attack by packaging should be improved essentially. As there exists a multiple interest in insect-tight retail packaging it was considered to manage the unsolved problems of insect-tight packaging within the working group "Protection of stored food by insect-tight packaging". In cooperation with the Biologische Bundesanstalt für Land- und Forstwirtschaft, Berlin, and with manufacturers of food, packaging and insecticides, an improved protection of food by insect-tight packaging should be realized by means of project-bound research work
