The invention relates to a device (3) and a method for reducing the damage potential of a snowboarding-induced avalanche in an avalanche-prone slope (1), comprising at least one structural element (31, 32) with at least two posts and at least one sheetlike element which is arranged at least between the posts and which is arranged at a predeterminable point on the avalanche-prone slope (1) such that the fall line (13) of the avalanche-prone slope (1) at the location of the structural element (31) and the sheetlike element (315) enclose an angle of less than 45 DEG to one another, wherein the sheetlike element (315) is designed to stop a fracture propagation within the snow cover
