The arts and craft of writing

By Angela Thody

Abstract

The book from which this extract is taken is about the debate between post-modernist and modernist interpretations of what academic writing should be. Hence each chapter, including this one, offers alternatives as well as the more generally accepted formats. This chapter outlines the process of academic writing from getting started, through maintaining the momentum and how to reach the end. It discusses how the PC can help and how to edit your work. The style and tone appropriate for academic writing are covered in topics such as using jargon, cautious language and selecting the right tenses
